My dad was born above a shop at 165 Stoke Newington Church Street and grew up there. My mum was born in Cobden Road, Hythe, Kent, but moved around Kent a lot in her childhood - they lived in Lyminge Green, Stelling Minnis, Sellinge and Stowting, before settling at Silks Farm, in Wye, from where she and dad married. Mum and dad met on a bus (he was a bus conductor) where they had a long discussion about Beethoven. Both of them were very keen on classical music. nell

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 22 Nov 2005 00:55

My Dad was born in St Annes on Sea, Lytham, to a middle-class couple. My Mum was born in Aberdeen, to a very working-class couple. They met in WW2 when my Dad was stationed in Aberdeen. Mum was only 16 when they married, and before they married, my Dad, a terrible snob, insisted that my Mum have Elocution lessons, to rid her of her broad Aberdeen accent. It still makes my blood boil to think that she agreed to this! Olde Crone
