I hope this thread has done what i hoped it would do, make us all realise that people become homeless for so many reasons . if it has removed some of the stigma attached to the homeless, then i am glad i put this thread up. When i sit with the residents at my centre, and i hear the sad events of how they ended up at the centre, i am crying inside for them, the things i hear are heartbreaking at times. There are some wonderful people on this board, who have helped with the homeless at christmas, have sent gifts for my residents for xmas, and who have helped me personally. To all you lovely folk. thank you. Shirley Ann.

Little Lost

Little Lost Report 25 Jan 2006 08:16

I feel like saying been there done that but things do pick up. We were homeless with a 2 year old and another about to be born so I had to burden my mum with all our hosehold furniture and us for a few months. We were fortunate enough to get a mortgage as we were in a desperate situation. But things progressed. We were living in Kent at the time when the house prices were rocketing so we managed to seel our house pay of the mortgage and have enough money left to buy a small terrace house up north. Feel like we sacrifised a lot by moving away from all our relations but at least now we will never be homeless as we own this little place out right. However it then turns onto my daughter and her 2 year son who became homeless. We then had the worry of sorting her out. We had to come up with a deposit for her and be guarantors for her private rented place. This annoys me as she is totally british but cant get a council property when you see all this immigrants being housed. ALthough I suppose that is another issue. Good luck Gloria

Hi Haven't read all the replies but you could try Housing associations they are many if not the sally army may help you, i have worked in Housing Homeless its not that bad they are there to support you, if you do need to present yourself as homeless because of you children's age they may need to present themselfs as homeless it depends where you live, but the housing office will support you and advise you, it is sad that the people that have caused this have'nt been made to pay up, if you know who they are sue themxx

Shirley, i have just read all of this thread, and i just wanted to say that i hope you get something sorted soon. These things do happen to ordinary, decent people, and you are so right to get us to think a bit more and judge a little less. I truley hope you find your own solution soon, and that it all works out better for you in the long run, you surely deserve some luck and happiness. Your son is lucky to have such fantastic parents. Thought i would keep you up to date on the housing situation, as someone mailed me to ask me how it was all going,Well i went to veiw a property earlier in the week, it was awful and they were asking £595 a month for it. It seems that you have got to pay about 650 a month to get a decent property these days. I have something else i am looking at , but i have to give it a great deal of thought before i decide what to do. I don't want to jump in feet first and regret it later, i have to take into account that i will have to pay at least £100 council tax on top of what ever rent i have to pay. But i am sure things will work out in the end. Shirley Ann.

Hello Shirley, I haven't added to your thread until now, as it brought back awful memories for me (that's not an accusation!! lol) from early 1990 for several years. I was in a similar situation, through no fault of my own, and which came as a huge shock (ex-husbands gambling came to light, together with huge debts I didn't know he had). I'm just adding to the thread to say, it may take time, but you will come out of this, especially as a stronger person. Regarding doggie, we had to put our two cats into a cattery for some months when we had to sell our house, and the owners of the place (who knew the situation) were very understanding, and gave us discount because of the long time the cats were going to be there. Oops, just been called downstairs to help with something! Better go for now, 'see' you soon. x
