A consultant , while examining my 5yr old daughter during a routine follow up appt. after eye surgery, asked me how long she had had a heart murmur. I was totally shocked, as we'd never been told that before. She then told me that I was a terrible mother, and that my daughter could drop dead any moment. My daughter was then referred for an urgent scan, and after a sleepless, very emotional night, the scan revealed absolutely nothing abnormal. Strangely, the consultant was unavailable to speak to me then... Sharon xx

Not actually said to me....I overheard my mother-in-law to be and my mum chatting over a cuppa, a couple of weeks before my wedding. They were discussing how long it would be before we split & divorced, they both said within a year. Still together after 16 years. When we picked up the last boxes from his mum's house she said to me 'I'll keep his bed...he might need it' Lol. It's definatly mothers and mil's that do it to us. Pen -x-

When my daughter was 20 months old and in hospital suffering a severe asthma attack, at about 3o'clock in the morning the doctor said there is nothing more we can do for her. My heart sank, I was beside myself. But she did pull through and now she is a 21 year fit and heathly adult. On a lighter note, in the morning the nurse said to me, I didn't need to go the the canteen for breakfast (I wasn't about to dash off anyway), as my baby had nearly died I was entitled to tea and toast from the ward kitchen. I don't know if it was delayed shock but I just couldn't stop laughing, I thought it so funny, food was the last thing on my mind. I suppose she was just trying to be kind. Sue

When I phoned to see how my premature baby daughter was - I had been sent home when she was 2 days old, and weighed 1 lb 10 oz , and I went to see her the next morning, not able to hold her or touch her (32 years ago and different treatment then). I was told not to stay and watch her have an injection she needed, so went home. Phoned before I dished up lunch, partner and his brother needed feeding, and when I phoned the nurse said 'Oh she died half an hour after you left' . No-one had phoned me to let me know. Many other things over the years sadly - each barbed comment cuts to the heart and they all stay locked up somewhere to wear down your self-esteem. Some cruel evil and thoughtless people around.

There are some very sad stories here!! My mother is a nasty piece of work so I know how hurtful comments can be, I was always told that i wasn't wanted because I wasn't a boy!! She'd had my sister and I messed up her idea of a perfect family!! The fact that she went on to have a still birth AFTER my brother was born really goes to show she would never have stopped at 2 anyway!! :O(
