O.C Place names intrigue me. The funnier or more unusual the better. I have noticed that most city streets are named after people. Trees etc and probably a bit boreing. The best and most unusual I have found are mainly in the countryside. LLx

Lindfield, West Sussex has a Noah's Ark Lane. Wonder whether everything there is in pairs! My boss lives in Fulking, Sussex. The village sign is up high as the council got fed up with the name being altered. Joanne

Joanne in Burgess Hill™ Report 4 Jul 2007 22:52

Fulking Hill and Devils Dyke are part of the South Downs. It is very high at DD, and on clear day you can see Windsor Castle (so they say). It is a place of natural beauty. Also popular with kite fliers and hang gliders. There is even a kite shop next to the Devils Dyke pub. DD is v-shaped and folklore is the valley was the work of the devil. The devil was digging a trench to let the sea flood the churches of Sussex. The digging disturbed an old woman who lit a candle, causing a rooster to crow, making the devil believe the morning was fast approaching. The devil then fled, leaving his trench uncompleted. The Isle of Wight is supposed to be the pile of earth from the trench Joanne
