A two parter starts Tuesday 25 ITV 9 pm.

Barbara Taylor Bradford, Brian Cox and Kiera Chaplin.

All delve into the lives of their poverty stricken ancestors.

Thought it might be of interest to some.

Emma :-)

Quite few of our ancestors were in a workhouse. most as paupers, some as single mothers and a couple who were then classed as idiots or lunatics :-(

I will be watching these programmes with interest.

DazedConfused Report 21 Jun 2013 15:16

Looking forward to it. But we know that the celebs will over react to the treatment of their ancestors (Brian Cox is supposed to be the worst)

Well all I can say to them is GET OVER IT

My beloved g/aunt Florrie was born in a workhouse (1897) and she was lucky because she was kept by her mother and they left Bristol and came to London where her mother met and married my g/grandfather. And this g/grandmothers' father died in 1910 in the workhouse.... Florrie died in the 1980s, she had a good life, was a district nurse and was loved by her husband, children and extended family.

I truly fail to understand how people can get so upset over something that happened a long time ago and over which they have no control. It may seem cold hearted on my part, but many of our ancestors had terrible lives.

That is so true DC but must admit when finding my own
who had a terrible life I did get a lump in my throat.
With me I go through a whole lot of emotions for them
why I don't know cause as you say we can do nothing
about it.

Thank you GoldenGirl1

I have already recorded this programme in case I should forget to watch tomorrow (Senior moment ha ha).

My paternal Gt Grandparents spent time in a workhouse so this will be especially interesting for me. Will have the tissues handy!

GinN Report 24 Jun 2013 12:06

Will be very interested to see it (apart from the "celebs"). Most people have an ancestor somewhere in their tree who experienced the workhouse (in my case, a great great aunt and her baby who were shunned by her family, and died there after a few years)
Should be poignant viewing.

Looking forward to watching this program.

What a shame they have to use these so called celebrities.
Still if you can look beyond their gushing it just might be Ok.

Hello GoldenGirl,

Whenever a program like this that has actors or so called celebs, they nearly always act up to the camera.

What a pity the program makers just use normal members of the public.
Then again, most of the people who enjoy these kind of programs like celebs.
