Alyson there have been several threads on this disease/asthma over years.

Have COPD. Do not know what age your Mum is but nurse told me many years ago that people of around my age who had childhood asthma - their lungs were badly damaged due to the fact there was no medication available in 40's and 50s.

COPD is used as an umbrella term for chronic asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and any related breathing complaint caused by any number of factors.

I spent 9 weeks in ICU in 2009 due to respiratory failure and I am still here!

If you wish to mail me please do so - will help if I can. I just put COPD in on search at top of page and lots of threads - with info - may be of use to you.

Hi All.
Mum is getting a little stronger day by day. She is still on the ventilator. They did take her off it for a little while yesterday but she was struggling a bit so put her back on it.
Thankyou Chris i will take a look at some of the threads when i get 5 minutes. My Mum is 70 and is a smoker but i would not say a heavy smoker. She has always been quite active and on the go.

Puss..
The hospital were pleased with hubby's progress on Tuesday. He is no longer vomiting and has even put on a little weight which he is not too pleased about. Hopefully now he has turned the corner and will continue to improve.

Hi Everyone.
Thankyou so much for all your kind comments.
Really good news today..
Mum is doing really really well and has been off the ventilator for a few days. Today she has had a smaller trachy tube inserted which has given her voice back and also had her catheter removed. She has been discharged from ITU so just waiting for a bed to come available on a general ward.

Thankyou so much.

Hi Everyone.
Mum has been moved onto a general ward today. She is quite happy in her little cubicle with flat screen tv on the wall. Her progress has been so good over this past 2 or 3 days hopefully it will continue and she will be home soon.

Thankyou all for your very kind messages of support.
It meant a lot to me and helped me through a very difficult time.
