Havent heard that one!
The hormones secreted by the thyroid are dependent on the activity in the pituatry gland deep inside the brain.

Hi Daisy

I lose hair when I wash it, have a foot in both camps so to speak, so does my friend. Don't have constipation, have Irritable Bowel, Reynards too.

And I think my problem is cutting out as much salt as I can
read somewhere that the gland uses salt to combat symptons ?

The GP asked me if anyone in the family had it................ like you the answer is no. Although these things are often hereditary, there are those cases where it is not.

My problem is always triggered by dieting!

Hi

In a nutshell the thyroid gland controls metabolism.
An underactive thyroid means your metabolism has slowed right down.
Food is digested slower causing weight gain and constipation. Hair can become lank and dull. The heart rate may slow. A feeling of sluggishness and general fatigue is often felt.

I have an overactive thyroid......... my metabolism is too fast, so my symptoms are the complete opposite.

Hope this helps x

Oh Pauline

I could hug you ((((((((((((((((((((((hug)))))))))))))))))))))))))))), tis hard for others to understand that we are all different when it comes to this problem.

Thank you. :)

Am pleased your OH's okay now Ann.

Me, I whizz when I whizz and then there are times when I think I do yet when I look round, I haven't ... time seems to 'fly' by me.

my lovcely OH had it and it is an insidious thing that takes a long time to recognise - it made him a different and difficult person to live with - once diagnosed though and with Thyroxine he was soon back to his old self!!!!

Hi Mo, Lyndsey

It is hereditary Lyndsey, the doctor told me. xxx

I get itchy legs Ray, can't believe I'm saying that on a public board, am very ladylike lol! Tis horrid itching.

Your friend sounds like he has hyperthyroidism, tis an overactive thyroid. My friend has the same with her eyes, bless her.

Rashy itchy things are a pain , sometimes a steroid creams helps.

My daughter met her half sister for the first time at Christmas after 30 years, and they soon discovered they both had thyroid trouble, so we can conclude it is passed down .?

~~ waves to Amanda 2003

Is she losing lots of hair Amanda, it was when I mentioned that during conversation that I was sent for a test; tis very very hard to diagnose it. xxx

No, tis new to me too Hayley. When I was diagnosed I was asked if there was a history of it in my family, told it ran down the female side of the family so warned every female I could think of.

Men do get it ... wish I'd known, I have a son, brothers, nephews ... xxx

Ray, it does getter once the medication is inside you.

Found a good web addy from the BBC,not too complicated, gives the symptoms. We have hypothyroidism.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/conditions/thyroid1.shtml

Mine aren't working at the moment tis why I am zonked, have to have the blood test, every box is ticked because I'm so frightened lol!
