what foodstuffs etc would you miss most!

When I used to be in Malta I couldn't get Mars Bars and things like that, so used to have to take lots out with me, but now there is more variety in the shops there altho still a lot of things missing.
My son was amazed at the limited range of goods available altho we did find one supermarket (a small one, not like our supermarkets) that had a proper butcher's section and the meat that was prepacked looked good, most of the time the stuff over there looks as if has been frozen forever or really manky lol

'Lo, Liz! How are you?
Yes, I do know what you mean about the limited choice in Malta. When we were there in the '50s Mum used to go and buy meat in the meat market in Merchants Street in Valletta, and half the time she really wasn't sure what cut it was - or even what meat it was!
We don't eat a lot of pork pies normally, but whilst living in Italy all we wanted was pork pies! A kind soul in the supply department organised a regular delivery of them to come out in the Diplomatic Bag as we were not the only ones craving them.
And good butter and fresh milk and cream, and unsalty water to make tea actually drinkable - I try never to take things for granted now. x

Hi Joanna, I was thinking about you today and wishing I had time to phone but o.h. was due home from work.
I had a tummy upset yesterday so not much sleep and have to be awake later this morning for the replacement/reparied monitor to come back so better get to bed soon.
Can't wait for him to get back on proper shifts but this week he is 12 hr days and next week, 2 x 12 hr nights then late shift so maybe then I can catch up with you.

Last year I had just come home from Malta by a few hours, how fast that year has gone.
Hope everyone is well at your house and away, are you still having some time away in November?
Take care, talk soon,
Lizxx

I lived and worked in a hotel in Turkey for 2 years - and really missed bacon and sausages! If someone was coming out to stay that we knew, we would ask them to pack some in their suitcases. lol

Hi Rose, their bread is sort of vinegary, isn't it? At least you can get good wholemeal sliced now lol
How will you manage to do his bacon and eggs when you live there lol

When my friend lived in Nigeria, and came home every summer, she would send via her hubby's company so free carriage, teachests back with all sorts of things, obviously only certain foodstuffs but things she couldn't get there and missed.

What is it about pork pies??
When they are readily available, Brits can go for weeks without touching one, but as soon as they are scarce - we need them!!
Yes, and I had forgotten how we longed for good bacon and cheese and sausages as well.

I haven't been anywhere much but if I had to live in Namibia I would miss our fruit juice. All of theirs has apple juice in it.

Their Marmite is not the same as ours either.I think it is because their beer is light like German beer so they must have a different strain of yeast.

While I was there I developed a taste for something called Sprinkle Spice which is like a dry form of Worcester sauce which you use as a condiment like salt or pepper.
Of course I bought a proper sprinkler and several bags to bring home.Namibia is a desert climate, very dry and the sprinkle spice flows freely. As soon as it hits Britain it is roll about in a big ball spice,Goddammit!
