i know this is a big ask but i am totally baffled with it all.

my gannaway family are completely confusing me. on the marriage cert (1885) of Charles Gannaway to Emily Constance Plummer, charles is down as a widower, i have looked on freebmd to find his previous marriage but i don't know which it is as am not sure where he was living.

now i have a contact who has told me they couldn't find him on 81,91 or 01 census and also info that he worked on the cunnard ships however on his wifes death cert in 1897 her occupation says "wife of Charles gannaway-beer house keeper"

i wondered if somebody might be kind enough to have a quick look on the census to try and find him possibly in 71 census with 1st wife. his name was Charles Gannaway brn 1850 in southampton to Henry Gannaway and mary ann.

also a couple more look-ups if possible, if anyone is at a loose end/fed up of their own tree.

on marriage cert witness is william plummer, i would ike to find relationship to Emily Constance plummer. if someone could do a lookup for me possibly 61,71 or 81 i beleive she was born st. pancras to Henry and Ann plummer. i looked on 81 census and found a possible but ann is as a widower and if henry was already dead wouldn't it say so on her marriage cert.

their children seem to disappear on 01 census. if someone could attempt to find them it would be a great help. names

Henry C. Gannaway 1885
Violet C. Gannaway 1887
Beatrice L. Gannaway 1890
Sydney Gannaway 1891
Frank R. Gannaway 1895

i beleive they may have been living with a plummer of some sort.

i know it's a big ask ut any help on any of them would be appreciated. here's hoping atleast something comes up. thanks. Leanne :)

Do you know for certain that Charles was the son of Henry and Mary Ann?

There is a Charles GANNAWAY ,22 cordwainer married to a wife Amelia, 44.
He is shown b. Pennington, Hampshire but is the only one I see of about the right age.

i'm not sure. where's pennigton? perhaps if it's anywhere near southampton it could be. that's the one gwyn found. i suppose if it's the only one about the right age it's possible. although she is an awful lot older than him- isn't that a rather large age gap?

ok well thank you michael, i didn't realise it was that close to southampton. i found afew marriages for charles in southampton just thought i had better check before i ordered. i have looked for a death for amelia on freebmd and can't find one before 1885 when he re-married which is why i had counted them out. thanks for looking.

but if i have the marriage for charles and emily in london in 1885 surely that can't be him. i must have it wrong somewhere. surely it can't be the same person. i know sydney's date of birth and his cert with mother as emily. oh dear this is not my day. thank you. :)

On the 1871 census he shows Amelia as spouse although they didn't get wed until the following year. Did he marry Emily Constance Plummer when he still had a wife in Lymington just saying he was a widower?
On the 1871 census his parents Henry and Mary Ann were at 34 Manchester Street in Southampton. Henry was a carpenter and unmarried daughter Mary Ann was a stewardess on a steam ship. Can't seem to find Charles in later census

Hi - I've just been tracing the family right back from the 1851 onwards and I agree with all those above.

There was only one Charles Gannaway/Ganaway birth registration c1850 +/-5 yrs, anywhere in the UKi - and that was the Southampton birth. So it looks as though we are dealing with just the one person if the ages on the census are correct.

On the 1851 Census, Southampton:

Henry Gannaway 39, Ironmonger carpenter
Mary Ann, wife
Henry, 15
Emma 11
Eliza 6
Martha 3
Charles 7 mo
Thomas 1

1861 Census, 15 Manchester St, Southampton

Henry, 49, Mechanic, b HAMPSHIRE
Mary Ann, 46, b Dorsetshire
Martha 14
Charles 10, b HAMPSHIRE
Alfred 9, b HAMPSHIRE

So - you can see that Charles is stated as born Hampshire right from back then.

He then married Amelia Gross in 1872 in Hampshire Southampton.

The only death entry for Amelia that seems to fit her age is a death in 1898 aged 67 yrs, Lymington Hampshire.

So - that being the case, it appears that if Charles married in 1885 to an Emily Plummer , then he married bigamously. this could be why we can't find him listed on further census records - he may have been using a different surname for the census for fear of being found ??? Just a wild guess! (NB - I have a someone on my tree who was still married when he took up with another woman, taking his children with him and used HER surname on the census records rather than his own).

Anyway, I cannot find a death record for Charles Gannaway born c1850 either.

It's certainly a mysterious one isn't it?

thanks to you all for looking. i didn't thinkm of the possibility he married bigamously. i'd always thought that henry worked on the ships which is why he wasn't around census time but i quite agree a name change and bigamous marriage would certainly make sense.

his eldest sone died in ww1 and his father was closest relative in swanage (Charles) so i beleive he was still alive by 1917. thank you all. well i'm getting there. atleast we have theories now. thank you

I have looked on the 1901 and found the children except Beatrice.
Sydney and Frank are in Southampton with a Mary Gannaway aged 30. Address not clear but ?ions Hill. First letter not clear. Violet is at 13 St Andrews Square Surbiton Surrey, neice of Frank and Louisa Burton. Henry is at the Orphan Working School Kentish Town London. Age shows two years younger but could have been lowered to get taken in by the school.

ooh thank you. although i have not come across a mary gannaway before. perhaps a third wife. haha. also not heard of any Burtons. thank you so much for finding them. perhaps beatrice was mispelled. afterall gannaway not that common and spoken could be taken as any number of spellings. seems strange that they were all split up. if Vi is at an aunt and uncle's seems odd they didn't take at least beatrice and/ or henry too. thanks again, i really appreciate it.

This is the only Violet I could find:

Name: Violet E Gannaway
Age: 13
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1888
Relation: Niece
Gender: Female
Where born: Dalston, London, England

Civil Parish: Surbiton
Ecclesiastical parish: St Mark
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England

Frank Burton 45
Louisa Burton 47
Margaret L L Burton 21
Violet E Gannaway 13
William Hurn 25
Beatrice A Smith 16
Emma E Smith 60

Is the above Beatrice Smith actually Beatrice Gannaway? I think this is the entry Michael was referring to - the Burton family.

although Beatrice should be Beatrice L and aged 11. it is possible but i can't find the link as to how he was her uncle. sorry what was Beatrice's relation to head?

Oh, maybe it was just coincidence, Leanne. Just checked the actual page and it says she was a "servant".

on the other hand it does seem a little odd that she be a smith. if emma e smith is 60 it's hardly likely that Beatrice be her daughter and there are no other smiths there. sorry could you possibly send me the image so i could have a quick look please?

ok. well it was a good thought atleast. thank you.i know i am being a complete pain but could you perhaps look to see if you could find emily plummer on any of the census with family so i could maybe try to figure out where the burton's come in as uncle/aunt? please?

♥Athena

♥Athena Report 10 Jan 2008 13:03

The link to the Burtons could be that his wife, Louisa, was a sister to their mother Emily. You would need to research that line of the family to see if you find a Louisa Plummer.

Never-ending circles, eh?

o i know tell me about it. this hobby sure does get confusing. i'm searching for marriages of frank burtons ah well we'll see. thanks for all of your help! it really is appreciated.

♥Athena

♥Athena Report 10 Jan 2008 13:11

Leanne - here is your link to the Burtons - have found Emily had a sister named Louisa:

1861 Census - 13 Euston Rd Pancras, Boarding House

Henry Plummer, 37, house painter
Ann, 38, wife
Mary Ann, 18, dau
Louisa, 7, dau
Edward, 5, son
Fanny, 4, dau
Emily 3 dau
Henry 1 son

So, let's see - there must be a marriage to a Louisa Plummer to a Frank Burton?

Hope that's helped. At least you know what happened to Violet.
