I assume that you mean in the GRO deaths index? Death dates aren't listed in the index, only the quarter/year is given. You have to buy the cert to get the actual date. From 1969 onwards, the birth date is listed however - is this what you mean? If this is missing then it simply means that the informant didn't know the actual birthdate.

Deaths (and births and marriages) are only recorded in the register according to the quarter they happened.

Each year is divided into 4 quarters:
Q1 = March (any BMD that happened in Jan Feb or March)
Q2 = June (BMD between April May or June)
Q3 = September (BMD between July, August or September)
Q4 = December (BMD between October, November or December)

Just bear in mind that for births especially, you had six months to register someone. So for example a person that was born at the beginning of September could be registered 6 weeks later which would fall into in Q4 which was Oct, Nov, Dec. In the same way that someone born in Dec could be registered in Jan of the follwing year.

Deaths and marriages were usually registered on the same day that they happened.

Hi again.

The death of my biological grandfather is registerd in 1970 in Hackney. There is no specific date listed like in most of the others on the page. what does this mean? does that mean no one registered him and he was just found dead that month and year.

regards
Emma
