The word Salop is typed on the certificate.
I am not sure if somebody has made a mistake in typing when I ordered the certificate.

If it's typed then it must be a copy of the original. The original would have been handwritten.

Where did you order it from? The GRO or local office?

If it's come typed from GRO, then the likelihood is that the original is not very clear.

Having said that, GRO quality control shouldn't allow out a certificate with nonsense on it. "sub district of midhurst in the counties of Salop and Southampton." doesn't make sense and they should know it.

I believe you should email GRO and quote their reference for the ordering transaction (it should be on the paperwork) and quote that bit that you have quoted to us, and ask for a sensible alternative. You shouldn't pay full price for something manifestly inaccurate!

1851 census mistranscribed as Karey.
The child Ellen Stacey dau.1847 Farnham. I would have thought her"mother" Ann would be too old to have her at age 52

Just for clarity; the Registration District of MIDHURST covers part of Sussex, and up to 1844 the part of Hampshire containing North Ambersham and South Ambersham. So up to 1844 describing Midhurst as in the Countries of Sussex and Southampton would be correct.

So "Salop" on the certificate is definitely wrong.

In 1844 the county boundary changed so that these two places were moved from Hampshire into Sussex.

BTW historically the county was "Southamptonshire" which over time became "Hampshire"

THe occupation of his father on the marriage certificate says he was a labourer as was William.

Rebekah.
You know Williams father is called John from his marriage cert. The birth cert for William you have is the wrong one because that one does not have a fathers name.( we have all done that). Working his age out from the census it appears he was born before registration as found by Portland Rose.

The IGI info with the batch no.gives you the baptisms of the children on the 1841 census who have a father John occ agricultural labourer
