I believe I have traced an ancestor on 1871 census who is listed on vessel 'Rinaldo' .. at sea.
How can I find out 1. if this is correct ancestor and 2. more info about the vessel. I tried googling the ships name but am now confused!

On 1871-07-16 Captain Visier of the Dutch vessel Aurora spotted the flagpole which the Megaera's crew had erected and Lt. Lewis Jones sailed with her to Surabaya, Java, which they reached on 1871-08-02. He despatched telegrams to the British Consul in Batavia (Jakarta) and to the Royal Navy Commodore in Hong Kong, who ordered HMS Rinaldo to sail to the rescue

You'll need to obtain his marriage certificate if you want to be sure that 'this' John ties in with info that you already know and is 'your' relative.

Lakes Lass.

If you search for HMS Rinaldo and not just Rinaldo, you'll find it was a Screw Sloop, built in 1860 and 1871 Ship HMS Rinaldo, bombarding Salangore Malacca (painting).

Hope this helps.

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 5 Jan 2008 17:26

If you apply for his naval record it will give you the period of time he spent on each ship which will confirm (or not) whether he was away at census time.

My grandfather's records show his address at time of signing up which, again, might match up with earlier census info for family.

Plus you might get details re any tattoos or distinguishing marks - and it includes his height, chest measurement and hair and eye colour.

Worth every penny of that £3.50.

Thanks Mummy Bear for the info.

I have census copies and Lucy Marina Cass m John Dowsett are confirmed relatives.
I have no idea who parents of John Cass are yet as I haven't got that far back... a couple of options but I got stuck with..and curious with...the Royal Navy ship .

I will now obtain this Navy record and see how I get on.
