Laura Report 22 Dec 2007 21:57

My great great grandad Harry Pudner (Henry?) married Mary Ann Solomon in JunQ 1890. She is down on the census as being born in Scotland in 1874. On the marriage certificate her father is down as John Solomon.

A kind GR member (sue lowrie?) managed to find her birth for me on Scotlands People a while ago, with it being registered in the parish of Greenock, mum's maiden name being Kellow and her birth date being May 1st 1872 at 11.50am, 3 Pellingborn St, Greenock.

Mary Ann Kellow had written under her name the following - June 2nd 1855 Truro England.

I've searched FreeBMD and found a birth for Mary Ann Kellow in Redruth Sep 1855.

On the census I thought I found the right Mary Ann Kellow (b Gwennap) but this wasn't her - she was still unmarried and with her family in 1881 census.

I've looked on the Scotland, England and Wales census for John, Mary and Mary and I can't find them. I also can't seem to find a marriage for John Solomon and Mary Ann Kellow anywhere! Can anyone help me work out where to go next please?

Thanks!

Laura

What is the occupation of John Solomon?

Scottish census on Ancestry can be searched by occupation.

Will have to dig out the cert, can't remember off the top of my head. I feel like I'm surrounded by boxes and bags of paper at the moment in my study! (I'm a teacher...)

Will have to try that when I find it.

thanks,
Laura

Scottish birth certs do give dates of marriage for the parents - sometimes the dates are wrong - so that marriage could be the right one.

Laura Report 22 Dec 2007 23:03

maybe it was a marriage then, and not dob for the mum as I first thought - i would imagine then that they had lots of earlier children>? And she would be one of the youngest? They would have been married almost 20 years before she was born!

Laura I have one that had been married for 27 years & 4 months when their youngest child (my Nan) was born so it is possible.

Laura

Laura Report 22 Dec 2007 23:10

Could it be a mistranscription/mistake with the James/John do you think?

Not had much luck finding John on the census, but then- if he was a seaman he was probably on ship...

imp

imp Report 22 Dec 2007 23:12

Think this John on the census is a Seaman, the same Mary Ann Solomon from the 1861 census is with a John on the 1891 and he is a Seaman.....maybe he did not get home very often...................

That one for 1861 is definitely likely as the daughter Mary Ann lived in Plymouth and married a Plymothian...

all looks very promising - thanks so much for all your help!

On the 1861 census image she's at the White Hart which I think is an inn in Plymouth near union street/the octagon... can anyone work out what it says for her occupation? Does it say framer? what is that?

Thanks

imp

imp Report 22 Dec 2007 23:17

Hi Laura,

I thought it said Framer, but will take another look.

Gail.

Laura Report 22 Dec 2007 23:27

have a possible match for 1841, in Kenwyn which is near Truro... will buy the marriage certificate just after Xmas I think, that will give me the fathers names etc.

I think I got tied up with the Scottish link, when in fact she was just born there, everything else seems to be back down this end of the country!

Thanks again for all the help!

laura

Laura

Laura Report 22 Dec 2007 23:30

Gail - maybe that's them but the person doing the census thought it was Penryn for the birth because that's where they lived?

Or am I just getting excited now? ! lol

imp

imp Report 22 Dec 2007 23:36

Hi Laura

I hope it all leads somewhere anyway.

Be interesting to see if the marriage is the same date but different year from what was on the birth cert - June 2nd.

Gail.

Laura

Laura Report 22 Dec 2007 23:38

interestingly, 1851 census has this

Mary Ann Kellow (*trewolla) b1833 st mary (truro) daughter
Elizabeth Trewolla head bPortsmouth 1805
Elizabeth Trewolla dau bSt Mary 1849
John & Margaret Walters - lodgers
John Toy age 9 - visitor

There was a Trewolla in the 1861 census with her I think? Maybe a niece of some sort?

Laura

Laura Report 22 Dec 2007 23:42

And I've found a marriage -
Jun 1840 Elizabeth Kello_ married Edward Trewolla in Truro.

So, Mary Ann Kellow was obviously born before that marriage to a different father, hence keeping Kellow as her surname...
