Hi all,
I am having major doubts as to the consistency in my research into the Mawson side of my family tree. I have a John Mawson, born circa 1840 in Darlington. He worked much of hife as a brick yard manager (brick maker), and married twice. Once to Elizabeth (surname unknown) and once to Martha Johnson.
I have a census image from 1851 which shows a John, born in Darlington with parents James and Hannah. I am almost 100% that this is my family. However I ordered John's second marriage certificate today and he has listed his Fathers name as John and not James.
Not sure where to go from here as I have been unable to find his birth cert or 1st marriage cert.

You need to start at the 'other end'...and work backwards, step by step.
What is the stated occupation of the father on the marriage cert?
When did the marriage occur?

If you ordered the marriage certificate from the GRO then both this document and the 1851 census image are essentially transcripts so either one could have the fathers name copied incorrectly.
I would suggest either try and find the same couple in a later census to confirm the name is correct or get hold of a copy of the marriage from the parish register as this is effectively the original
Hope this helps

Ok.
My Grandfather was John Thomas Mawson born 1908. His birth certificate states that his Father was called Robert William Mawson and his Mother was Margaret McGeorge. Roberts marriage certificate says that his Father is called John, and is a brickyard manager.
That is how I came to the belief that the John on the census was my relation
Hope that helps

Does Robert William's age on marriage cert fit with his being 14 in 1891?
The John Mawson in 1861 would certainly seem to be the same one as the 1891 'version'.
Any thoughts on all the info posted?

Apologies, been at work tonight and only just checked the thread.
I am astounded that I missed the fact he had 3 marriages. I never did think to search on surname variations.
I have Elizabeths death certificate, but I do not have John's birth certificates. Now that I know there is two so close together I may just have to order both and make sure his parents didnt have a son that died young and called the following son by the same name.
I have been unable to check Robert Williams marriage cert again but I will do 1st thing tomorrow.
Still perplexed by the John/James think - maybe an emunerator error.
Thanks to everyone for there help, sometimes even the most blatant of things isn't obvious when your looking at things the wrong way.

Robert William Mawson was 24 years old in December 1900 - according to his marriage certificate.
So that would match his age in 1891

Possible death of wife number one
Name: Mary Jane Mawson Year of Registration: 1862 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Darlington County: Durham, Yorkshire - North Riding Volume: 10a Page: 8 The possibility remains that the father was John James, but preferred to be known as James, although his first name was quoted on official documents
Almost all of my father's family were known by their second forenames..........tracing their bmd info was a nightmare!

Hi all,
I hope you all had a good Christmas. I have just returned home from a holiday in the lakes to find the most recent certificates I ordered lying on the doormat :)
Right here goes........
I have the following marriage certificates;
November 12th 1837 - James Mawson (a full age - Labourer - Father called John) & Hannah Robinson (a full age)
November 28th 1859 - John Mawson (21 years - labourer - Father called James who is a labourer) & Mary Ianson (21 years)
November 10th 1864 - John Mawson (25 years - brick maker - Father called James who is a farm labourer) & Elizabeth Watson ( 23 years)
April 8th 1896 - John Mawson (56 years - brick maker - Father called John who is a labourer) & Martha Johnson (40 years)
And I have the following birtch and death certificates;
Birth: June 2nd 1839 - Darlington - John Mawson - (Father called James Mawson who is a labourer, Mother called Hannah Mawson, formerley Robinson).
Death: November 22nd 1894 - Eliabeth Mawson, wife of John Mawson - foreman (brick maker).
Maybe I am looking in the wrong places, but does this info solve the James/John confusion?
