I never seem to be able to find more recent certs on Ancestry even though it says Marr. & Deaths unto 1983. for example I can´t find my own marriage certificate, so am I right in thinking that a lot of stuff isn´t on line?

There are gaps sometimes....but it should be there.
Are you looking in the Complete lists....and not the partial ones?

If you want to PM something you know should be there,I will attempt to talk you through it, if you like.

Thanks Gwyn where are the complete lists on Ancestry?

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 16 Dec 2007 10:07

Itake it you have an Ancestry sub...?

On right hand side in list of More Collections...
click on England and Wales BMD Indexes then on the new page which comes up there are 3 lots of listings

Complete lists 1837 -1983

Partial freebmd indexes 1837 -1983

Complete list 1983 -2005

Each list is subdivided into the type of record you are searching.

Okay, home page.
More Collections
to get to Eng & Wales BMD I need to go thru
All Databases on home page right?
that brings me into Complete lists with Eng. & Wales BMD free. (that was where I was looking before).
I don´t have a page coming up saying the 3 lots of listings. Have I missed it somewhere?

Libby Report 16 Dec 2007 11:07

My marriage isn't listed either. Have searched under my maiden name, previous married name and my husbands surname,

Libby

Please ignore above - was searching under 1982 instead of 1992.duuurrrr. Senior moment

Heather

Heather Report 16 Dec 2007 11:09

Daisy, the name search for bmd are limited to the freebmd - if you want to look for say, your own recent marriage, you need to use the complete bmd index - enter your name and the quarter, year etc. and then bring up the images not just a result which gives the names, you actually need to look at the images of the register.

Heather

Heather Report 16 Dec 2007 11:09

Libby, if you pm me with the details Ill have a look for you. It should be under your first married name.

Sorry to mislead you.....I don't have the posh version, ...Lol.

I'm not sure of my way round that version of Ancestry but hope you are able to find the lists.

You need to be accessing the UK version...........not the .com site

Didn´t know I had a "posh" version! It was a prezzy! Don´t worry Gwyn it must be more complicated than the "unposh" one. I´m just grateful for your help.

Heather, it just comes up no matches so I can´t get to see the original entry. Thanks also Reggie. I would have thought the more expensive version would be more user friendly. Still haven´t sussed it out yet which is frustrating.

I am getting these deep feelings of inadequacy this morning......

Chica in the sun ☼

Chica in the sun ☼ Report 16 Dec 2007 11:46

Reg, How do I do that? Do I need to subscribe to another site? My subscription runs out in a couple of days so I could do that.

Heather

Heather Report 16 Dec 2007 12:06

Daisy if it comes up no matches - it does sound to me like you are just using the partial free bmd version rather than the complete bmd index.

Chica in the sun ☼

Chica in the sun ☼ Report 16 Dec 2007 12:15

Yes Heather, it sounds as though you are right. but it doesn´t say anythiing about Partial. I think Reg is probably right that I´m using the wrong version of Anc. but I thought that according to the bumf that the more pricey versions contained everything the cheaper version had plus more. So what should I be subscribing to if it is not Anc.com? Anc.Uk or somethiing? I want to make sure it´s the right one this time.

Kate Report 16 Dec 2007 12:30

The one that's partially done usually comes under the heading of England and Wales FreeBMD Birth Index: 1837-1983 (for instance) rather than England and Wales, Birth Index:1837-1983.

The first is the incomplete version (in the sense that you can search it by name but only if that name has been transcribed), the second is more complete (but you have to search it page by page).

Chica in the sun ☼ Report 16 Dec 2007 12:33

Okay Kate, will go and see if I can find that.

Chica in the sun ☼ Report 16 Dec 2007 12:39

Kate, I can see an E & W birth index (not the Free one) but it is only from 1984 - 2005 where is the one you mention?
