Genealogy Chat

I am looking at The Genealogist at £68.95 a year. I like this one as you don't have to buy any credits. Before I subscribe could anyone advise me? How free are the viewings? Can anyone recommend a different/better site?

I subscribe to Ancestry which i believe in now £79.95..don't think i've even looked at the one you have put up

Ancestry has

England, Scotland,Wales & Channel Island census from 1841-1901

And loads more..put it this way i'd be lost without it

I subscribe to both Ancestry and The Genealogist. I have found relations on The Genealogist site that I haven't been able to find on Ancestry as it seems that the information transcribed is sometimes more accurate (less mistakes in spelling names and places).

On The Genealogist, when you search the census for a name, they display the address as well, which I find useful - Ancestry don't do that. The Genealogist organises its census data by counties, which can sometimes be useful providing you know the county you are looking for.

It also has other records on it, a few parish records, more marriage records from parish records and other records which can be useful.

Having said that - I would never be without Ancestry as overall I think it is the best.

I am glad no-one has given me a 3rd choice.

I am only going to subscribe to 1 so I will look at both again.

I think showing the addresses on The Genealogist sounds very useful but Ancestry seems to get the thumbs up with most of you.

Miss Ellie the majority of us have ancestry - all the available census, the WW1 pension records, some parish records, the Pallots Marriages, some wills and court refs and generally I dont know how anyone can do this hobby without it.

Definitely Ancestry

Like Lynne I subscribe to both, as the full address as on the census form is transcribed too it makes it a bit easier to read, also a new thing on Genealogist is that if you click on the occupation it gives you details of what that occupation actually involves, plus sometimes I find ancestors on one and not on the other.

Saying that if I had to choose, it would be Ancestry all the way.
