Hi All,

I'm hoping that a fresh pair of eyes may be able to help me. I have been looking for my Gazey family in the 1901 census for a while now and can't seem to get anywhere.

Family details:
William Gazey born 1853 Aston, Birmingham (died 1899)
Eliza Gazey (nee Ames) b. 1860 Bermondsey, London
Lousia Gazey (married Enoch Ames in 1897) b. 1877 Aston, B'ham
William John Gazey b. 1879, Camberwell Surrey
Thomas Clifford Gazey b. 1885 Aston, B'ham
James Leonard Gazey b. 1888 Aston, B'ham

The head of house William Gazey committed suicide in 1899. From the inquest report into his death I know that he and his wife Eliza had been living apart since 1892 and that at the time of his death the two younger children Thomas Clifford and James Leonard had been living with him at 4 Victoria Terrace, Victoria Street, Small Heath Birmingham.

At the time of the inquest, Eliza, his estranged wife was living at 196 Bordesley Green, Birmingham with their son William John Gazey. I have searched the census for this address and when I finally found it I found they were no longer there!

I've tried to find another marriage for Eliza between 1899 and 1901 but no joy. I also searched under her maiden name of Ames.

In 1881 I found the family in Farnborough, Hampshire, no idea what they were doing there but its definitely them. By 1891 they were back in Aston, Birmingham.

I really want to find out what happened to the children when their father died so if anyone could help then I would be eternally greatful. If any further info is needed then just ask.

Thank you

Sarah

Could this be your William John?

I think that is probably my William John, he was single in 1899 so if he were to marry before the 1901 census then it would have been in 1900 or early 1901.

Thank you for that

It looks like William Guise married Elizabeth so your William possibly married Edith.

So in 1901 he could be still in Aston.

I wonder if he married Julia?

Yes, I thought they might be, I have the marriage of James Leonard Gazey to Beatrice Athersych in 1911 at the Register Office, Aston Birmingham.

I was just hoping to find out where they went when their father died as they were still young. I was wondering whether it might have been the workhouse. It's a sad enough story anyway.

Thanks for the above,

Sarah

Thanks Ozi, I really appreciate your hard work.

It's just so frustrating to have a piece of the jigsaw missing, I hate having gaps in their lives!

Could this be significant?
In Nov. 1910 Edith Gazey, 28 and her children, Edith 11, William 7 and Bernard 6 emigrated to America to join her husband W. J. Gazey in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They were from Birmingham. Edith's nearest relative back home was her sister Mrs. Gregory, 33 Alderson Rd., (something?), Birmingham.

Margaret, where did you find that, that is great! I wonder why they went to America? Presumably W. J Gazey found work there?

They definitely seem like my family, thank you very much.

So I have William John in Aston definitely in 1899 and also in June 1902 (or at the least 9 months prior!) so odds are he is somewhere in Aston during the 1901 census.

I could order William Gazey b. 1902's certificate to see if I can get another address to search in 1901. It's an expensive hobby but these names become so important to you!

The Ellis Island site here:

http://www.ellisisland.org/

You have to register but it's free.
When you find the name you're looking for click on "ship manifest". You might have to go to the previous or next page to find the page that has the name. Take note of the line number that the name is on and check that line on the previous or next page to find out who they're going to join. Kind of confusing but the pages are never in the same order.
Good luck!

Thank you for that Margaret, that's great to know. Although I have been doing this hobby for a while now it turns out there is still much to learn!
