This one has stopped me.
My Great Grandmother, Susan Smith was born in New York 1865. Her Father was Austin Smith, he was a master mariner from Liverpool (I believe). I have always been told that Susan was born on her Fathers ship. Susans Mother was Elizabeth (don't know a surname) but she was born in Liverpool. I can't find Austin on any census. How do I go about tracing Austin and where can I get details of Susans birth please?
Grateful for any help. Thanks
Irene

You could check 'births at sea' 1854-1887 on findmypast and see if anything comes up (pay per view).

Also the National Archives Site to see if any kind of Seamans record comes up for Austin Smith.

Wow thanks Witchypoo, Susan had a daughter Fanny Smith Strickland (my Gran). Perhaps named after her sister Fanny.

OK Just seen what Gail has added

I would go with the Austin and Elizabeth Sadler marriage

Irenemac

Irenemac Report 17 Oct 2007 17:08

Yes Gail, I have a copy of that census entry I assume Austin was dead by then and that's why Elizabeth was an annuitant

Julie

Julie Report 17 Oct 2007 17:12

Irene

how sure are you that Elizabeth was born in Liverpool

Because i think Elizabeth Sadler was born in Warwickshire

Irenemac

Irenemac Report 17 Oct 2007 17:14

Now I'm lost, Witchypoo.
Why the Sadler marriage as opposed to the Pepper one? Or am I missing something obvious?

imp

imp Report 17 Oct 2007 17:16

So Elizabeth remarries and becomes a Parry by 1881, so he must have died before then.
