Hi,
I'm after some advice - very new to all this.

I have found my G.G. Grandmother in the 1901 and 1881 census'. She is listed as Lizzie Lantaff aged 54 (widow) in 1901 and Elizabeth Lantaff aged 34 (widow) in 1881. I can't find her under Lantaff in the 1871 census so I'm thinking she maybe got married between the two?

How can I find out her maiden surname? I don't know what her husbands name was but have checked a few possibles but they don't seem to match because of the dates and names of later children.

I know she had 3 children - Emily, George and Susan so thought the easiest way would be to try and find their birth certificates and see if the father is named. My grandmother was Emily Lantaff but I can't find her birth either!! She would have been born 1873-1875.

I'm not sure where to go next - any tips appreciated!

The birth certs would give her maiden name too.

Have you checked on freebmd for a marriage involving a Mr lantaff and an Elizabeth in the right time frame?

I think Emma, Susan and George fit the right dates/areas. I guess Em could easily become Emily.

Blimey, she was back there in the workhouse again with the kids wasnt she. Poor girl.

Wow!

You're all so quick. Thanks very much.

Emily was stated as age 8 in 1881 and age 26 in 1901 which would make her estimated Year of birth 1873 to 1875.

Susan was aged 1 in 1881 so EYB 1880 and

George was aged 6 in 1881 so would be about 1875.

I can't find an Emily born in 1873-1875 (I did see the 1879 one Heather but pretty sure that's not the one because I've also found a death record for an Emily Lantaff aged 0 in 1879).

I also can't find George born 1875 but I do think the Susan Jane registered in St Ives 1880 is probably the right one. I'll have to order her birth cert.

With regards to marriage details I have been on my local Registry details (I'm fairly sure that they lived in the St Ives, Huntingdon area) and have found a Jonah Lantaff who married an Elizabeth Cooper in 1871 which I got quite excited about but I've also found him on the 1881 census and I know my one would have been dead by then (Elizabeth stated widow in 1881).
I also found the George Lantaff who married a Hobbs in 1873 and a John who married a Jones in 1876 but again I have found later records of them living so they don't fit.

Sorry if this is a bit garbled - not very good at how you should present stuff yrt but I'm getting there by reading all your hints!

I wonder if Elizabeth was a widow when she married George? You need to get that marriage cert. aswell to get the generation further back.

You know how to order them for £7 each from GRO online? Never pay more than £7. The refs above are the ones you need to order them.

1871 census records Elizabeth as being unmarried
