my gt gt grandparents had 9 children from 1867 - 1885 all born sussex

my gt grandmother was 2nd born in 1869, the query that i have why was wasnt her birth registered but all of her siblings were ???

any suggestions ?????

Birth registration was not compulsory until 1875, but I don't know why they would register all the other births, and not hers.

Have you checked the images or just the index?

i have checked find my past and ancestry

i have her marriage but her birth puzzled me....

also i cant seem to find her parents marriage , david page and ann levett.both from sussex

ps I must say that beats my gg grandparents who married in 1909, 35 years after their first child was born!!

In my gg grandparents case, he was a widower on the marriage cert. I found a previous marriage for him & presume that he had to wait for his first wife to die, as divorce was too expensive in those days!!

Also, I understand that pension laws came into effect around that time, allowing widows to claim pensions.

i do know that her parents thought that she was too good for him so maybe they had to wait till her parents had passed away to make it easier for them to marry.
shall have to checked her parents deaths to see if dates match

If they weren't married when your grandparent was born and hubbie wasn't at home, you may find that the birth was registered in the maiden name

There are some PAGE registrations in Hailsham district on the freebmd site about the right time where the children are just shown as 'Female'.

Perhaps one of them is your ancestor.

do you know if they register a birth without a name whether they have to register a name to that person at a later date.
would'nt she need a birth cert to get married????

Do you think these two might be the birth registrations of the first two girls, I cannot see one for Jane or Sarah, but can see the others as listed in the 1881 census.

mary jane birth was 1867 which is on 'free bmd' website
sarah was born dec 1869 so i would think that her birth would have been registered march qtr 1870.

so this is them on the 1871 . I see that Mary Jane is called Jane on the census so maybe sarah has a reg first name too.
