Hi All
Being a bit of a novice at all this I think I need some help in trying to figure out who is who on one section of my tree - If you can offer any guidance or point me in the right direction I would be really grateful.
Ok where to begin.....
My GreatGrandmothers parents are shown on her bc as Thomas & Rebecca Beasley (nee Taylor) on the 1901 census they are shown as married living with their daughter Matilda (My GGM) and the age difference between them is about 30 Years! on the 1891 the census shows something different, they are living at the same address but Rebecca is shown as Rebecca Beasley, Single and the heads Sister in Law. The head is shown as Thomas Elliot....
I'm trying to work out their actual names so I can go back further in my tree as without this I don't know where to go??
I cannot trace any marriage between them but I did find a marriage of Thomas Elliot to Betsy Beasley in about 1854 so thought maybe Betsy and Rebecca where related but the age gap between them is too great to make them sisters???

Sorry, I've waffled on but this has been bugging me for weeks and I now cant sleep at nights for trying to work it all out!
Thanks for reading.

Surely Thomas Elliot's wife would have been a Taylor, not a Beasley!

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 1 Sep 2007 11:10

I think that in 1891 Rebecca Beasley is mistranscribed as "single" and is probably married to Thomas Beasley who is back in the place where he was born. They both seem to have occupations to do with laundering and washing.

Rebecca could be the sister of Thomas Elliott's late wife - there isn't too much age difference. I have siblings with 25 years between them. My own eldest sister is 20 years older than my youngest brother.

The marriage of Beasley/Elliot was found before I had Matilda's BC showing Taylor.

The 1891 census I refer to mentioning the Thomas Elliot I really think is the same Thomas (age and address etc are all too much of a coincidence)
Sorry Reggie or someone else could you add the 1891 census info if you dont mind, I dont know how to do all that technical stuff!

There is also a Sybil Taylor on the 1891 census.

I put the 1891 below the 1901...........

'Thomas Bearley's' occupation on the 1891 is 'Hawker'

Kath - I thought that could be possible too so tried to find a match or link between Betsy and Rebecca (Taylor & Beasley) but I wasn't sure how to do it properly.
I searched the family names for Buckinghamshire but I couldn't find the families having a daughter Betsy then later a Rebecca.

Maybe his name was Thomas Elliott Beasley and the enumerator thought his middle name was his surname. However, it does actually describe Elliott as a widower on the census.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 1 Sep 2007 11:19

Have you looked for a death of Thomas Elliott?

Perhaps the house they were in actually belonged to Thomas Elliott and when he died Thomas and Rebecca Beasley moved in (which is why the same address comes up on both census).

I am only trying to give ideas fo you to think about, as there is a Thomas Beasley on the 1891 census from the right birthplace and born the right time.

Surely Betsy Beasley would have been Thomas Beasley's sister and not Rebecca's sister. This would still make Rebecca the sister in law of Thomas Elliott.

All are possibilities I shall look into - Thank you.

I haven't searched for Thomas Elliotts death, thanks for that.

The Minnie Beasley that is mentioned later married a man called Epps I believe, I spoke to one of her descendants and she seems to think that Rebecca Beasley was her mother.... only one way to find that out I guess.

You also need to bear in mind that in those days "sister-in-law" could also mean "step-sister".

The Thomas & Mary Beasley is a different family (I think!) They are shown on all census upto 1901 so surely that cant be the same guy ?

Can anyone find a Rebecca Taylor born that time in that area?

Oh I didn't know that Kath, hmmm that could be another possibility I guess.
