Hi, Can any of you genealogical wizards out there solve my missing Isabella Martin WESTON, please? I have her birth details but can find nothing concerning her marriage (assuming she got married) or her death details.

She was the daughter of John & Marion Weston, born Jun Qtr 1908 at West Derby, Liverpool 8b 550.

John & Marion Weston also had an adopted daughter, also called Isabella Weston b. Sep Qtr 1908 West Derby 8b 388, Liverpool, who died Jun Q 1922 age 14 West Derby 8b 112, Liverpool. The death being registered by her 'father' John Weston.

I am awaiting the birth certificates of both girls.

You appear to be working forwards, rather than backwards, which is much more difficult, especially as you can't access info such as censuses.. Is there any particular reason for this?

I wonder if you realise what a task this would be? Firstly, it would involve viewing every marriage image from the time she became 16.........until ??????

And finding a death would be entirely dependant on whether one found a marriage.............or not.

She was a sister of my late mother and the only details I have of her, are her birth details. Just trying to discover whatever became of her.

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my request, it really is appreciated! The info you have gleaned matches mine exactly, unfortunately the lady of Birkenhead, which as you will know is very close to Liverpool, is not the lady I am seeking.

As I have become bogged down with it, I thought I would ask the experts here. I know it is a toughie - otherwise I wouldn't have asked.

I never thought of starting my searches at age sixteen, rather thought twenty would be about right, seeing as none of her twelve brothers and sisters wed below that age. It would be very confusing to have two children in the same house, with the same name. You may find when you receive the certificates that they are actually the same person. This has happened twice in my family tree.

Hello Jimmy, I was interested as I have Weston's in my tree but they are from Shropshire and much earlier on.

Do you know why Isabella had Martin in her name? Could this be her mother's maiden name or another family name? Do the siblings have Martin in their names?

One other thought, have you searched for anything using a double-barrelled surname?

Thanks for taking the time to reply, it is much appreciated. You may be interested to know that my Weston's are originally from such places as Prees, Morton Say, Lee Brockhurst, Wellington, Darliston + a Wolverhampton connection + the name Maddox. The earliest date being 1763 - If anything rings a bell I hope you will come back to me.

I like your idea of the two Isabella's being the same person, it would make life much easier, though I have their two registered birth dates and the death of one of them. Having said that, the certs seem to be taking their time in coming, although it is holiday season.

Isabella Martin is named after her aunt Isabella Martin Stevenson, unfortunately I have not come across the name of Martin in their ancestry yet.

Many thanks for good your suggestion of the two Isabella's being the same one, but unfortunately I have the two sets of birth details. The adopted Isabella unfortunately died aged only fourteen, but it seems that both girls were registered at birth as 'Weston'. Obviously both could not have been born of my grandmother being only 3 or 4 months apart.

It will be interesting to see the birth certs. If they have both been registered as 'Weston', it might indicate that the adopted Isabella must have been someone very close to the family.

I agree that such a thing often happened in families of those times, although in this case there appear to be two registered dates of birth for the two Isabellas. No doubt the answer will be simple when discovered, and I thank you for your good advice.

At the moment I have no Weston's in Brighton, although mine appear to have migrated all over the country it seems.

Many thanks for your response and most interesting information, for I had very little Idea that our ancestors were allowed to marry at such an imature age. As my aunt was born in 1908 she would easily come under those terms, and your advice, which is most appreciated, gives me other angles to work with.

I am not sure sure yet if my Weston's reached that far north yet, but they were well domiciled in Yorkshire.

Hi Christine, many thanks for that most interesting snippet of our social history, it is difficult to comprehend such happenings to those unfortunate children. Imagine, though distasteful as it is, such a thing happening to our own children of today. Doesn't bear thinking about.

Just had another thought. Did you know your aunt Isabella?
If not, this may be because both Isabellas are, after all, the same person!!
My dad was adopted and his 'birth' is registered 4 times!!
Twice under his mother's maiden name and twice under his adopted name - I personally think some mistakes were made, and he should have been registered twice: once under his mother's maiden name (she was unmarried) and once under his adoptive name, 14 years later when my gran married.

Perhaps your Isabella is registered under her original
name (Isabella Weston), then re-registered when she was adopted a few months later by someone in the family with the same surname, and she died aged 14.
