Laurie, Thanks for your kind offer, but my ancestor Edward Casey was probably born in about 1795-ish in Ireland, possibly Cork. If anyone has any idea where I can go from here, I would appreciate it.

Hi Catherine, I'm sorry but I haven't had any luck as yet. The census for W.Meath that I have found is only a partial one. I have looked on Ancestry surname search and they have 1 entry for Creevy in County Antrim in the Ireland householders index, they also have 4 parish and probate records for Down. I will keep looking for you. Laurie

Thank you so much Catherine and Laurie for your help, you have given me somewhere so start. Laurie - I have tonight found my g grandfathers death certificate. His name was Patrick O'Reilly born around 1872. The first records I can find of him is on his 1897 marriage in Edinburgh to Mary Ann Burns who was also born Ireland. Thanks once again for your help. Regards Margaret

Catherine and Laurie, Thank you both so much for your help. I have just had some great breakthroughs in CAVAN!! I have found a few births with my GG grandparents names as parents on IGI. I would say it's too much of a coincidence to find all four of my GG Grandparent's names at the right time with the right names in Cavan and nowhere else. It's all so very exciting - thank you!! Any ideas where I should go from here as so far I have only researched in Scotland. Regards Margaret

Hi Margaret, The problem with Ireland is a lot of records were destroyed in a fire, however some regions in Ireland do have details that go back to 1600's. I'm not sure off the top of my head about Cavan but I can take a look for you tonight. I know the census for Westmeath is incomplete. Sometimes the only other way is to look at either gravestone inscriptions or parish records, but then without knowing the parish can make it impossible. I'll take a look for you later as I need to look into Cavan for my relatives. Laurie

Thanks again Laurie for your help. I really do appreciate it. I can't believe what I have found so far.I was really giving up on the Irish line of my tree to carry on with the much easier scottish lines! Regards Margaret

Update I struck lucky I found a website for Carlingford where some of my gran's rellies lived and I emailed the person who runs the site and she's asked around the town about my rellies and is going to look in parish churchyard for me. To other Ireland researchers DON'T GIVE UP. George

Hello All: It was very nice to see Margaret make a break through on her Irish ancestors as it seems to be a brickwall for so many on here. I have on the 1901 Scottish census an ancestor who stated he born County Down. I believe (but stand to be corrected) that is in the North of Ireland. His name is POYNER. Anyone come across this name in Ireland? There were about 8 records for POYNER on the Irish Origins site, but I hated to buy 300 units for that small amount. Did anyone else try the free surname search on that site? I shall try some of the sites suggested on here and wish everyone as much success as Margaret! Barbara

It is less difficult if they were Roman Catholic, so I hope that they were. Mine were Presbyterian / Church of Ireland, far trickier! Joy

I was so pleased to see this thread near the top - being a fairly newbie, I hadn't known that it existed! I have come to a dead end with one branch already due to them being of Irish descent. Could anyone please tell me which area the name of FLOOD is likely to have come from? I have my great-grandfather in Plymouth for his marriage and death, but his birthplace is on the census as Ireland - no specific area. My mum knows that the family definitely came over from Ireland in ggf's time via Liverpool. Very grateful for anyone pointing me in the right direction! Mandy :)

Hi Folks, Maybe someone out there can help me.I am looking for details of a Mary Catherine Burns who lived in Birmingham in the early 50s she left Ireland around 1947.
Her family lived on a farm in The Killarney aria. I was adopted and she was my birth Mother but because she originated from Ireland I am hitting a brick wall. I would dearly love to know what became of her.
