I've followed ( and thankyou)all the tips given and I still havent found my Henry Brown (no middle name). No luck with three sets of grandparents, sisters, brothers, under other family names etc etc etc. Interestingly, his two eldest siblings are missing too - I just presumed that they may have moved from the area - but I can't find them either............ The only thing I haven't tried is hospitals because I don't know how to? Can anyone help with that?

Neil, Thanks for offer, yes she was alive even went on to get married! Details are DOB 27/5/1894 DOD 27/6/68 buried at Leytonstone Cemetry London. Appreciate any help thanks Sue

Sylvia I have had a look for Henry (Harry?) Brown and agree with you that I cannot find him if we assume that what you know to be true was actually what was written down. I have managed to find children living with aunts and uncles, and in hospital and often their details are not as accuirate as they are if living with their parents. I imagine this is because the enumerator in 1881/1891/1901 would NOT have asked the child (who would have known if 8, I guess) but would have asked the (less knowledgeable) relative!!! Lynn and Sue If you give me details, I can try and give you some more details through ancestry.com. I think that the Wood boys may be because Emma had been married before and married Robert Porter after her (Wood) husband had died. Sue - are you sure that the sister was alive in 1901: it could be that she had died between 1894 and 1901. Let me kow details, and I shall have a look for you..... Best wishes Neil

I've also got a missing child! Just started to research grandmother's tree and know for a fact she had a sister born May 1894 but she is not with the family on 1901 census,can't find her at all. Family name Minns from Bermondsey London.Any advice please?!Sue

I have 2 children on the 1881 census living with Robert and Emma Porter listed as sons but their last name is Wood! I haven't figured this one out yet but I am assuming that they are nephews on Emma's side probably staying with them.I need to find out what her surname was to unravel the puzzle. Its little things like this that keep you so obsessed!

Sylvia It may be that he was living with an aunt or uncle or with his maternal grandparents. I have found some cases of the surname of the aunt or uncle being used (in error in transcribing or by placing ditto underneath). Have you looked for the mother's and father's siblings in the census? Thank you. I did do a search for Harry Brown and one under his step mothers maiden name - just in case! I also looked to see if he had been with grandparents- however, I think I'll go do it again!

I can only find one Henry Brown of the right age born in London but not living with his parents, but he was born & living in Bethnal Green. Not a possibility?

Did you do a search for Harry Brown? If he was away somewhere, they might have used the nickname? Or of course it could be that he is somewhere and the transcribers have written his name wrong so that your search will not find him easily. Good luck!

Thanks. I do have a hard copy of the original census page. Other siblings are there. He wouldn't have been at boarding school but could have been in hospital. Wouldn't his name come up on the online census search if he was in hospital or would I have to do an online search of all the patients?
