looking for William Moon born 1855, father James and mother Elizabeth Tindall (and their marriage), Hastings/St. Leonard's, Sussex, England, please

Janet

Janet Report 16 Oct 2003 14:39

Found these in the 1881 census - do you know if he had a middle initial? 1. Wm. H. MOON - 1881 British Census / Sussex Head Gender: Male Birth: <1855> Hastings, Sussex, England 2. William MOON - 1881 British Census / Sussex Head Gender: Male Birth: <1856> St Leonards, Sussex, England The first one above was a fisherman, wife's name Elizabeth (they were living at Bexhill though); the second a Grocers Assistant, wife's name Anna, living in St. Leonards, so he seems the better bet. Jan in St. Leonards on Sea, East Sussex

thank you, Jan, i would say it is the second one also, do you have access to marriages? i can't seem to find the James Moon and Elizabeth Tindall marriage, i would say around 1855 (1850-60) please because i don't know of other siblings Jennifer

Janet Report 16 Oct 2003 17:16

The only one I found that looks possible is James Moon, December quarter 1854, Hastings 2b 45 - but there wasn't an Elizabeth Tindall to go with it. If you have any credits left on the 1837 site, it might be worth cross checking that quarter to see if Elizabeth's name is shown there. The date seems to be a good one. Jan

Janet Report 16 Oct 2003 17:25

This is what it says in the 1881: William MOON Head M Male 25 St Leonards, Sussex, England Grocers Assistant Anna E. MOON Wife M Female 26 Bexhill, Sussex, England Grocers Assistant Wife -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: Dwelling 12 Southwater Road Census Place Hastings St Leonards, Sussex, England That is so interesting, because there used to be a grocer's shop in Southwater Road, it closed about 5 or 6 yrs ago, I wonder if that was where he assisted? Haven't been able to find anything concrete yet about his or his parent's marriages. Jan.

Janet Report 16 Oct 2003 17:31

EUREKA!!! March Qtr. 1881 Hastings 2b 151 William Moon married Anna Elizabeth Cripps. Jan.

Janet

Janet Report 16 Oct 2003 17:35

This is the ONLY James Moon marriage in the Hastings area on BMD: Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Dec 1854 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bartlett Catherine Judith Hastings 2b 45 GASTON Mary Ann Lewes 2b 45 Lock Henry William Hastings 2b 45 Martin Mary Hastings 2b 45 Moon James Hastings 2b 45 As you can see, its not complete, but it seems to be a male missing rather than a female. But I suppose it could be one male and two females missing, you just never know. Still seems a cross check on 1837 would be the next step. Do let me know if you find anything. Just noticed, Mary Ann Gaston is Lewes, not Hastings. How odd. Let hope she isn't the extra woman so that the records match. Bother. Jan.

Jennifer, Do you think this was William's dad? James MOON Head M Male 53 Hastings, Sussex, England Baker & Grocer Charlotte MOON Wife M Female 49 Bath, Somerset, England Alice PAINE Serv U Female 16 Three Bridges, Sussex, England General Servant Dwelling 127 Marina Census Place Hastings St Leonards, Sussex, England Crista

Janet Report 16 Oct 2003 21:51

That ties in with William being a grocer's assistant, doesn't it? It might be that Elizabeth was Elizabeth Charlotte. My grandfather Charles Aflred is shown as Charles in 1881 and Alfred in 1891. I think they just did it to confuse us. Still looking. Jan.

[email protected] Report 16 Oct 2003 22:02

yes, Crista, it is his father, in process of ordering his birth and his parents marriage but still stumped on James marriages (Elizabeth Tindall or Charlotte ? or............like Jan says Elizabeth Charlotte Tindall? but i have looked that way but can't find her at all, would like to order her birth but can't find it, also i would like to know if William had any siblings, i tried 1837 but could not findanything that made sense to me, i was in England in May/03 planning to go back May/04, Jan do you remember the name of the store on Southwater? i have a pic of 12 Southwater (where they lived) i took in May, Anna and William are buried here in Ontario along with one son Hubert (my grandfather), their other son is buried Capetown, South Africa and the other one in Melbourne, Australia Jennifer

Janet Report 16 Oct 2003 22:13

This is SO annoying. I've found a record on BMD of a James Moon marrying an Elizabeth (but not Tindall) in Somerset in June Qtr. 1848, Frome 10 689, and it won't let me in to see what her surname is. Just suppose its a varient spelling of Tindall! But then, it might be Smith or anything. I'll keep trying though. Jan.

Janet Report 16 Oct 2003 22:20

Sorry, Jennifer, I don't know the name of the shop, and its a very long uphill walk from here. If my hip is being kind to me I might walk up there one day, but I think all the fascias have been removed. It might even have been demolished, and new houses built. I'll tell you what I will do though - I'll go to the local library as soon as I can (I don't go out very often, but I'll try and force myself) and see if I can find a local trades directory from the end of the 1800s/earlly 1900s. With a name and an address to go on I might just find reference to their shop, or find the address of the shop in Southwater Road. I have walked past it so many times when I lived in that vicinity, it was the way to go to the railway station. And if I can work out how, I'll see if they have any earlier censuses - unless you've already searched them. Perhaps you could tell me which you have looked at, so I don't duplicate your work. There are a few shops on Marina, if I ever go along that way I'll try and see where the house is and what's near it. Its right on the seafront, a terrace of five (I think) storey Regency houses. Jan

thanks Jan, but i can when i go back to southwater and marina next may, i don't want you to get hurt and same with the library but i guess i would have trouble finding what i am looking for but will try, the marriage i ordered was the one you mentioned Mary Martin was the bride, James father was from Hastings so i doubt if the other marriage is his but you never know, if you think i should try i will, my other great grandfather owned the store at 147 Queen's Road, Hastings, it is on a corner with a clock up high (Cuthbert Baker and Agnes Wall) and he lived at 'Rossmore Manor' 18 Quarry Rd. Hastings (now Rosehill Nursing home) he was born at sea and both parents died which is another big mystery but looking for Moon's right now, will look at censuses i'v looked at Jennifer

Jennifer, I will be going into the town centre one day next week probably, and would be delighted to visit the reference library for you. Let me know if you'd like a census look up, I'd like to try my hand at it. Otherwise I'll look at the trade directories. I found Mrs. Moon senior in the 1891 as a Widow living in Kenilworth Road. When I tried to look for the younger couple, I found them on the index but they weren't on the page. I noticed that the address was 137 Marina, and tried to get back a few pages to find if they were living at the shop, but it all froze up on me, and I had to shut down my computer. As it was quite late, I left it, but I'll have another go soon. Allan, my partner, lived in Marina about 25-30 years ago. I asked him which number, he said 118. I asked him if there were any shops near, and he said Yes, a grocers shop, which looked as if it had been there for years! So he has actually shopped at the one that your relative once owned. He couldn't remember the name though. I think its more likely the son was assistant to his father than the Southwater shop, don't you? The other shop in Queens Road is now a lighting centre, on the corner of Waterworks Road. Jan

I got into the 1891 just now, this is what I found. (Sorry if you already know this, but I found it very interesting): 1 Kenilworth Road, St. Leonards (2 rooms) Charlotte Moon, Lodger, Widow, 59, Living on own means, born Somerset Bath (on the Index it says "Batle") 127 Marina, St. Leonards William Moon, 35, Grocer, Baker, Wine & Spirit Merchant and Postmaster. Anna E Moon, 36. Arthur W, 9. Bernard J, 6. Hubert J. 2. Annie Allen, Servant, 18, Domestic Servant. It was all there, just not on the page the Index gave. Jan.

wow, thanks for all of this! how/where do you look up 1891, i ordered fiches through our LDS site but could not read them! 1881 in on LDS site, 1901 is pay per view which i have done partly (don't know what year James died in, another thing i'm looking for, i guess he would be buried at the Ridge) so if you want to try your hand at 1871, yes i would say you are right about assisting his father at Marina, will check on weekend about other censuses i have, i was out last night on our local LDS library, i'm in Northern Ontario, Canada Jennifer

Janet Report 17 Oct 2003 14:08

1881: 72 Manor Road, Hastings Cuthbert Baker, 22, Grocer, bn Hastings Agnes Baker, 27, Grocer Wife, bn Hastings. All I've found so far on the 1891 is this one: Charles Baker, 32, Manager Grocer, bn Eastbourne Agnes Baker, 37, bn St. Leonards C R N, son, 4, bn Hastings M T, daughter, 3 A C, son, 5 months, all living at 109 Stonefield Road. Stonefield Road runs parallel to Queens road, so would be useful if working on the corner of Waterworks Road. The ages are right, he could have changed his name from Cuthbert to Charles (stranger things have happened), and I'm learning not to take too much notice of where they say they were born. Do you know any of their children's names? I look at the 1891 on the Ancestry . co . uk site, I've taken out a quarter's subscription. The trouble is, I'm finding it so useful and interesting that I might have to renew it! If you find these people on the 1901 I'd be very interested to hear the outcome, it makes a change knowing where the people live etc. Jan.

[email protected] Report 17 Oct 2003 14:42

ok, forgot about ancestry, i don't have that subscription, yes that is them, reginald cuthbert, maude therese (my grandmother) and albert charles then you will find lillian eventually, tonight when i go home i will let you know about 1901, maybe it was transcribed wrong and eastbourne he may have found out that as born at sea eastbourne has something to do with it , his father Joseph (but on Cuthbert's marriage certificate Joseph is a carpenter...so.. another mystery) was a captain or something, he and wife got coleria? or something like that ( the runs, bad ones) and died but he was born and OK so i can't find his birth registration either!

Janet Report 17 Oct 2003 16:52

Could he have been a ship's carpenter, and family history promoted him to captain? I've heard of similar things happening. Jan.
