Hi , I shall be trying the batch no tip out soon, I have written to a submitter in Australia but never got a reply! That was months ago, still never mind but its still worth a go you might be luckier than me. Happy Searching Meryl

Hi Nina, Maybe I will investigate further into that branch, could prove interesting! I must look them up in the 1880 census too. One strange thing, when the young mormons used to come door to door proselytising, when I lived in Hove as a kid, Dad always used to enjoy talking to them, and Mum would have a fit and try to get him to shut the door. It was her branch of the family that ended up in Utah, and I'm wondering now if she knew then!!! Di.

Diana I had to smile about your reference about not wanting to be preached to...form an LDS member. One of my first cousins , 3 times removed .. emigrated to Utah in the 1860's - had 2 concurrent wives ( shown all together on the 1880 census) - had loads of children. So now I have loads of cousins in USA - have spoken to a couple - one from each 'wife' ( so to speak). But neither of them have mentioned much about them being Mormon or of their ancestor being a bigamist !

I haven't tried using Batch Numbers to find more family members yet, but I certainly will now. Thanks for that tip. Also, I just wanted to back up what Margaret in Burton on Trent said earlier - don't take everything you find on LDS site as gospel. Please check it out. I made contact with a lady in USA, who believes totally that we share ancestors. She said that the information had been in her family for years. We both got quite excited, but after checking out a few details, I am 99% certain that we're not related. How easy it is to link into the wrong family. Hi, I did send a request for further info to the submitter to IGI, whose surname was Jones, the name I was searching. I got no response. However since then I found my relative on another site and wrote to the address and was informed by the site manager that the Info had come from the records of a now out-of-business research company that they had purchased,and discovered after further searching that the original submitter to LDS records had been a distant relative of mine, deceased by the time I wrote, a descendant of the branch of the family that had emigrated to Wisconsin. One of the members of that family had moved to Salt Lake City and become a Mormon, and the submitter had obviously been trying to trace his English relatives. Now I don't know whether to try to take this any further, as I don't want to be preached to. But I would suggest you do write. You may find a lot of new relatives. Di.

Oddly enough i'm about to write to someone who's name and adress is given as a submitter of info - if i get a reply i'll let you all know! Sue.

Has anyone tried contacting any of the submitters who have put the info on LDS site? I know sometimes their home address is given and I wondered if anyone has found a new 'cousin' by this method.

Thanks to all for this useful information. I have now found a no. of siblings for my ancestors.

You can also play around with the batch numbers. If you have a christening which will begin with C, try putting an M in it's place. You may well get some marriages.

Diane Be wary of anything submitted by an LDS church member. Apparently they have to submit their family tree to a certain point. Whilst it could be true, some of it could be a complete work of fiction. NEVER take anything from the LDS site as gospel. It is a great finding tool, but, ALWAYS try to check the info you find with the original parish registers. Margaret

There isn't always a batch number, sometimes the information is supplied by an LDS church member. I found a lot of one of my families and there wasn't a batch number on any of it as it had been supplied this way.

Don't worry Ann. It took me about a month to work out that the FamilySearch, IGI, LDS and Mormon site were all the same thing!!

Ann As far as I know there should always be a batch number. After you have typed in a name and clicked to search; you then get a list of names. When you click on one of those names which is, say, a record of a christening, you see the names of the parents, the date and the church. Scroll down and there will be a batch number.

Hi Ann When you find an entry on the IGI (Mormon site), scroll down and you will see a batch number. You can click on it. Say the entry you found is a christening record, type in the surname only, plus first names for Mother and Father, and you will get a list of children, christened at the same church with the same Mum and Dad; therefore siblings to your ancestor. Does that make sense?

The batch number will be on any IGI information obtained from the LDS site or else go to the Hugh Wallis site for a general search.
