Dare I ask? :) More or less as the other Free, BMD, CEN. They have got a lot of work ready but do need more help. Will post some messages below.

I am on the mailing list for freeReg and posted a message to ask what was happening about the site as many people were thinking it was a no go. Some of the coordinators have added some messages, I'll post next. Free BMD and FreeCen wouldn't be able to help if it wasn't for VOLUNTEERS and a lot of US wouldn't have got where we are with our trees without them. FROM SOME of THE COORDINATORS MESSAGES...snips of the emails.. "From LDS on CD, the only county up and running is Worcestershire at present, it works a bit different to FreeCEN, (btw,I'm project manager there as well), if any one wants to do some for WOR again contact me We have a bit of work to do with other counties, but if folk want to go to Record offices and do it there, great, mail a coord, tell them, or tell me, fill the form in on FreeREG site Regards Dave ps spread the word where ever, quote me if you wish" "Myself and Michelle Jeffery mmjefferyATchilitech.net are to be the co-ordinators for the Scottish part of the project. At the moment we have permission (yet to come in writing) from the Scottish authorities to do the transcripts of the Old Parish Registers and have been promised the film from GSU as soon as all permissions are in order and we have all the film numbers. (I am feverishly doing these as we speak!!!) There should be more news in a week or two. By the way, if anyone else who subscribes to the site you have mentioned is interested, we will be looking for county co-ordinators soon. It will simply be a matter of keeping track of who has what and will not involve the procedures needed for the censuses as each record in the OPRs stands on its own - hope you understood that!" "You need not have parish records yourself - everything would be supplied by us, if you wanted to do some of the Scottish ones. I'm sure Dave would say the same for the English side. I know how much value these projects are for people who do not have access to the original records very easily and we are trying to get the Scotland one started as quickly as we can. " The emails are hard to work out, GC/GR dont allow them, you are welcome to email me and I will send them on. The mailing list address is, if I can get it right, http://www(.)british-genealogy(.)com/mailman/listinfo/freereg Worth while if you want to check up on how its going. Lets hope we can get some more help, we would all use the site and it doesn't happen over night. Thanks for reading, Jo.

But do we need the microfiche reader, a la FreeCEN? I don't mind helping out as long as I don't have to search the country for the right equipment.

If thois doesn't work send me an email and I will pass it on! By the way you dont need a microfiche for freecen, they can send you a CD (might have to wait because I think they are running out of the stock they had!)

Have just checked their website, and you either need to buy a microfiche reader or use those in the LDS or Records Office. I don't have the former and I don't live anywhere near the appropriate venues. Ah well.

No worry. Email one of the people who I've said they have CDs they can give you/loan you. The site doesnt explain it properly. I will email you with their addresses so you can check out from the "horses mouth" so to speak! Jo.

Some Libraries - particularly those with a Local History Studies area - have fiche readers that are free to use. Maz. XX

Hi Jo, can you pick which areas you want to transcribe,I have just joined Lancashire parish register society and there are a couple of areas that I would like to look at that they have not yet done, so could kill 2 birds with one stone if I could do transcription for lprs and freereg. John

Hi Jo Dave contacted me within hours of you sending my address. I sent him an email back but have heard nothing since. Is he a very busy man or do you think it's worth dropping him another line? Jeanette

Hi Jo well I contacted the Sussex Co ordinator weeks ago offering my help - stating I did not have microfiche but time and a computer and enthusiasm. I have not had a reply and just assumed they did not want/need anymore help. Rgds Tracey Kennedy
