I have on a death certificate of a Frank Guy Ellis in 1907 that his widow was Lydia Ellis, we were unaware that he was married until I got the death certificate. I have tried looking on Free BMD and on 1837 online but cannot find a marriage for them, is Lydia a nickname or a shortened version of something else? Anybody any ideas? Maggie

I've got quite a few Lydia's in my tree. I also have ancestors, both male and female who used their middle names -- so perhaps she may have used her middle name (or Lydia was her middle name)?

Maggie: Have you tried looking on the LDS site to see if they are listed on the 1881 census?

Hi Lisa, Frank Guy died in 1907 aged 21 so I do have him on the 1881 but living at home with his parents, I need to know Lydia's maiden name to find her in 1881. Maybe she just said she was his widow but they did'nt actually get married? Anymore ideas anyone!!!! Maggie

Maggie: All of my ancestors left Great Britain before 1872, so I don't know what else you could try. But, perhaps you could post another thread, asking what other records you could check? (Someone may have suggestions who wouldn't necessarily be reading this thread.) Good luck, hope you find her.

Hello Maggie If Frank was 21 in 1907, how have you found him on the 1881 census? Surely he was born c 1886.

Maggie I have found the family on the 1891; I think!! Were his parents James and Kate? Do you have this information? I know it is not what you are looking for, but sometimes people end up marrying their neighbours...but no Lydia I'm afraid.

Hi Suzy, Yes I do have the 1891, but thanks anyway. Maybe she married him on his death bed and it did not get registered? Maggie

One last suggestion Maggie. Have you checked the Scotlandspeople site? Maybe they eloped to Gretna Green!!
