Hadn't got that far to be honest (at work at the moment). Amazed you found them under that name ! Amazing isn't it how manes can be so badly mistranscribed/change... Thanks again ! Paul

I hadn't noticed that... it's a possibility isn't it ?

Paul, The household before in 1881 was the Charlick family. The enumerator probably just messed up, kept wanting to write Charl... Crista

I do have access yes, but thank you for the offer. I've got the image now. Interestingly none of the places of birth are anywhere near what I was expecting them to be. But it has to be them ! So the only mystery now is why Richard was Charles for a short time. Perhaps when I get the marriage license I'll find that his fathers name was Charles.

Paul, Do you have access to Ancestry? Otherwise I can send you the image. Crista

hadn't double checked with 1837, just freeBMD, but thanks. Potterpury is the correct district, covers part of north bucks and south northants, including Stony Stratford, which is where Matilda's mother ran a pub.

Paul In case you hadn't already done so, which I assume you have but anyway.... Checked the marriage on 1837 and the reference number definitely corresponds with a Matilda King and Richard James Knock. If my memory serves me correctly, Pottersbury (?) Dec Qtr. Lou

Kim, Since he was Richard when he was married, and Richard in 1891 (see above), and named his first son Richard, I'd says his name was probably... Richard :) As to why he was known as Charles in 1881.... who knows. Maybe he just liked the name. Thanks for you input. Paul

Kim

Kim Report 16 Dec 2004 10:11

As they have a son Richard i would guess one or two things! Richard was the father's name on the marriage cert and the parish clerk wrote the father's name in the wrong place and the groom was really Charles. Or the enumerator just wrote the wrong name down in error. Possibly ,he was called Charles but really a Richard? Kim

Crista, thats brilliant, thank you... hadn't tried the name variations. This has solved a second mystery for me too - had never been able to find Maria's husbands name beforehand !! Thanks so much... and to everyone else that assisted too. Paul

Paul, I had an awful few years trying to find my great grandfather (born 1885), Got my grans birth certificate (1908), then grandfather's mariage certificate - his name was Sidney Gifford or Gilford Johnson. I couldn't find him in the 1901 or 1891 census - his father was John, which didn't help. Then I thought maybe his dad had died and Gilford was the surname of his real father. No luck. One day whilst playing around, I put the name Gilford in as a forename - and came up with a family!! Seems he was registered Gilford, but when he left home called himself Sidney. His brother Ivan called himself Frederick. On a simiar theme, my uncle Bill was registered Charles, G aunty Nell was really Alice, G granny Grace was really Loveday. My grandfather's best mate Stan was really George - and so it goes on!! Oh and my dad changed ALL his names when he was adopted at 14 maggie

perhaps a wealthy relative called charles was about to die and he changed his name in hope of getting the money

Unknown Report 15 Dec 2004 15:34

that hadn't slipped by unnoticed Ann ! Just neglected to comment on it. I think the most likely scenario is that Richard decided he fancied being known as Charles later in life. Stranger things have happened.

AnninGlos Report 15 Dec 2004 15:30

One interesting point is that the son is called Richard. Ann Glos

I guess the answer is going to lie in the marriage certificate. I may find that one of the witnesses is Charles, and the names may have been transposed by the vicar. Or his name could be Richard James, and he just "assumed" the name of Charles later in life.
