Hi All, I just wondered if anyone knows whether there is a database of Pub Landlords anywhere ? I recieved a death cert today that shows one of my ancestors to have been a 'Licenced Victualler' in Portsmouth c1925. I presume that is another word for a Pub Landlord. Does such a database exist ??? If anyone knows of one, id be grateful regards Glen

Hi Don't know whether their is a data base but you could try contacting breweries in the area or you could try contacting The Morning Advertisers which is the trade paper which covers the Licensed Victuallars, their e-mail is [email protected]. They may put an article in the paper to see if anyone can help. Lynne

Hi Glen. I found out that my great grandfather was a licensed victualler in Hampshire. Apparently he ran the Yacht Inn at Itchen. If you find out how to obtain the records, please can you let me know? Thanks, Sharon

hi there i just though i would let you no that my Dad had The Bee Hive Pub in Roman rd, Bethnal Green, from 1938 till 1971 33 years. thats a long time. Joan

Glen Was there no home address on the certificate to help you? If not maybe you could find him on an electoral list in Portsmouth. I would think it likely that he lived in or near the licenced premises.

Glen Do you have the address of this person? I presume you do on the death cert. I was just wondering if you put the address into 'google' whether anything will come up? My G.Grandmother was a Victualler in the late 1890s-1910s. She was listed at an address on the 1901 census and it came up with the pub's name. Just a thought...... Regards Dawn

Hi Dawn and Gwyneth, Thanks for the replies. I checked the address, 74, Kings Rd, Portsmouth, and it appears that the address does not exist nowadays. What i may do is check a Kellys Guide around that time, 1925, and see if a pub is listed there then. best regards Glen

Right Glen What I would do now is contact the local Library. I had a similar thing with one of my G.Grandmother's pubs in the East End of London. It appears it was probably bombed during WW11. I too found it in the Historical Directories. Try 'googling', your ancestor's name on that. Good Luck Dawn

Glen...... Me again..... I've just put 'Kings Road Portsmouth' into google. It seems the road is still there. I am just wondering whether it may be worth heading a thread 'Does Anybody Know Kings Road in Portsmouth?', and seeing if anyone remembers a pub. Just another thought. Dawn

Dawn, did you come across The Beehive, on or near cadogen gardens. My great grandfather ran it for a period 1880s I think. Alfred Smith...I know little else about him. My Grandfather was Edward Arthur. How do I look up teh 1891 cnesus? Grateful for any assistance JA

Glen Just looked up 1918 Kellys. 74 Kings Rd was "The Falcon" P.H. Proprieter was Mrs Emma Lester. Any good?

Dawn , I do not think the Pub still exists, someone found a couple of sites for me earlier on when I was new to the site but got stuck at that point with Smiths and a mite discouraged so went onto other branches of the family. Met my Uncle again in Adelaide a few weeks ago I know it is impportant to him as well as my mama in UK who is 86 if I could find out a little more so here I am at it again! I am grateful for your help.. JA

Is interesting to know the pub was called 'The Falcon' My ancestors, Thomas and Bessie Bundy must have been licencees there in 1925 (when he died). I wouldnt have thought it would have changed its name between 1918-25. I dont think it is still there now, but may pop down there next week and have a look !!! best regards Glen

You might find the local archives hold the annual licencing lists for pubs. They had to apply for a licence each year. I have 19C publicans and we have been able to sort out some dates from these licencing lists. Anne

Hi everyone There is a book published with the names of pubs and owners. My wife had an ancestor who ran one in the 1800,s and then his daughter took over. It is now demolished, but the book had details of them. I will find out the name and author and get back to you. Gordon
