The site gives you full details. You have to register to use the site, but only pay if you think you want to look at something in the index. More is being added all the time, but it can take a little while to get the info into the format needed for the site.

does anyone know which counties are covered and which aren't?

I have found Family History Online quite useful, especially for marriages which are not on the IGI, and for dates of death. I think that it is a matter of luck, because some counties have really good coverage and others nothing more than can be found elsewhere.

Paula If you tick the check birth box and put a date range, then you can narrow the field to just (say) people born in 1850 +/- 5 years, which can reduce the number of entries to just the likely ones. B

Julie It says that you need to find the information you want to view and then click on the amount that it will cost at the side. That will then take you to the section to make payment! Lou

I think there is an element of luck because the records vary from place to place. I spent an evening searching first to 'test the water' then decided to punt a fiver. It was well worth it and I found some 1841 census info which whilst not complete gave me some new leads, but best of all found burial records for an entire branch of my mums family in the church yard for the village where they lived which included children who died young whom we never even knew about. The only complaint i would i is that if i need to look up a common name on a census then it brings up loads of hits for that name and you have to pay to view them all which can work out expensive. Does anyone know a way round this? Paula

Yes, it's very useful if the parish that you want is on there. You can check the database coverage before you pay. I bought £5 worth of credits, and they've already paid for themselves - I had found a death on FreeBMD (1838, before ages were shown in the index) that I thought might have been GGGG'dad and was about to send for the cert, but then I found the burial on FHO. It cost me just 5p to check and it turned out to be an infant death, obviously not what I wanted. So I'm already £2 up! Also, found another ancestor who was in and out of Devizes prison throughout his life!

I've found it very useful as it seems to bring up relatives I've not found elsewhere! Also not only is it cheap, but as the credits last a long time, you're not under pressure to use them all in 48 hours or something silly like that. I didn't know about it till I saw it recommended on here. Well worth supporting. Sandra
