Sorry Brian, I have tried every variation possible on the 1851 disk (even managed to crash it LOL!!) but the only one that comes up for 1841 was the James that I listed yesterday. Sue:-)

Brian, I have looked on the 1837 online site, and saved an image for a James Garner b.1841 in Downham (probably Downham Market, Norfolk which is the right area for Ashill) If you send your email address to me(click on my name to send a message) I will send it to you. Don`t know if it is the right one though! Frances

The info I found was from the 1801-1837 marriage index, which I have. The site I gave you is a useful site for Norfolk info, which I thought might help. Sorry if I confused you. Frances

Hi again Brian, Any joy yet? I have just read through the replies. If Pauls info sounds like a good match then it would tie in with the marriage info I found for William Garners marriage in Ashill. Might be a good place to start searching. Good luck Frances

Brian, think you may find that the Victorian Norfolk accent was incomprehensible if he had moved to another part of the country. I had Norfolk - Norwich on my GGFx2 census 1851 when he was in Stepney. He actually came from a village called Hethersett, even by today's standard that would probably have been pronounced something like "Herersart" and as he wouldnt have known how to spell it the enumerator probably just thought, "put nearest big city"!

I have just double checked and the only James listed with a father called William, within around 5 years, is the one that I listed. There are a couple of James's that are listed as Gchildren, so would not know their father's name. Sue:-)
