Ive had a quick look and cant see a Bernard Rushton of right age in right place, hang on a sec and I will see what I can find on the census for you. 1881: Is this a possible, just the initial B. I take it he was from Shropshire? Alice Rushton abt 1839 Shifnal Parish Of, Shropshire, England Wife Shifnal Alice Rushton abt 1868 Shifnal Parish Of, Shropshire, England Daughter Shifnal Ann Rushton abt 1881 Shifnal Parish Of, Shropshire, England Daughter Shifnal B.T. Any idea when Bernard and Maria married and where?

Start with yourself and your parents and work backwards. Record all the info you have and where you got it from. This stops you dong the same information x2. AS you work backwards you will find things may not all fit into place, but don't worry, there are always people on this site who are willing to help with most problems even difficult ones. The further back you go don't forget you get another of parents and grandparents etc etc etc. It can be a very time consuming hobby but very rewarding. Dont go to far too quick, get all the advice that you can and try different ways of finding the information. I have been doing it for about 2 years and have got back to 1659, on some name and branches but on others I have only got back to my great grandparents 1885, and have reached a complete blank. Enjoy the hard times and relish the help and support from people on this site, they are very helpful. If you don't understand something ask someone to explain it, most are only too willing to help YOurs miriam

I think I would apply for Lilian's birth certificate. you will then be absolutely sure who her father was and be certain of her mother's maiden name. Then you should be able to find both mum and dad on the 1901 census. With any luck you can then go backwards fron there. Alice

Wow, too many names! The first thing to do is start with what you do know and work backwards. You have a date of birth so you can look up the reference and buy the birth certificate - that will give you the parents names and then you can look for their marriage and get their fathers names and so on. So, go one step at a time, find out the reference for the birth you are sure of and get a certificate. As a newbie, you may want to look on the homepage, New to GR which gives a run down of researching. Good luck.

I have just started my grandfathers George Edward Turner/Rushtons side of the family tree and have come to a brick wall already. All i know is that his mother was Lilian marie Rushton born :05/05/1910 in dawley, Shrops. Her Mothers name was Maria Dunn? Born around 1870-80. Maria's first marriage was to a Bernard Rushton this must have been Lilian's father. Then her second marriage was to a unknown Hayward she was around 70 years of age at this marriage. it is believed maria had around 13 children and believe some of them were named Sunny, Emma, Rhia, Lilian (above), Martha others are unknown- We know that martha had a daughter Janet Hickman (Married surname). Can anyone give me any advice of where i should be looking etc. Would really appreciate a little direction. Thanks Laura
