Linda, Any links in an email can send a notification back to a spammer that you have opened the email message. Once your address has been verified it qualifies you to get more spam from them. The preview pane can execute a virus or trigger a Web bug. This happened frequently in Outlook 98. Crista

Baz, Think it's better on this board. The GT board moves too quick as there hundreds of updated threads on that board. Crista

Hi Linda, In effect, that`s just what I was saying. I now have the option of opening or deleting, whereas I didn`t before.

It doesn't stop viruses as they are carried in the attachments you open. It does help to stop spam. If you open a speculative email, it reports it back somehow ( beyond me) that it is an active email address, then you get bombarded. Or something like that so my son said!

Crista, That`s what was happening yes,so really I`ve been lucky not to have received a virus, because it would have opened immediately.

Crista

To stop the message opening automatically. Click on view on tool bar at the top of the outlook page. Then click on preview pane. Your open message should disappear and you will just be left with the list of messages.

Ros, Not just spam, but `proper` looking Emails. I know I can `block` some senders, but thought it would be advisable to open only those emails that I know are really legit.

Through your ISP. if you want to get rid of spam, mailwasher allows you to bounce them back. Ros
