Im hoping it might be easier to read, putting the request on a thread this way!! I have been unable to find my paternal Grandfather!! We don't know him at all!! he is suposed to have been born about 1881, in Sydney, Australia!! We believe he was in the army!! The Machine Gun Corps!! Either during or after WW1, he came over to England MANCHESTER!! After he left the army he became a Draughtsman, could this have been his profession before the outbreak of war? (is there such a list for Apprentices?) He was known as FREDERICK HENRY GEORGE!!! of course he could have been HENRY FREDERICK GEORGE?? He may have died in London or Manchester in 1927??!!! I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE IN AUSTRALIA AND ENGLAND!!!! WHO HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND OUT SOMETHING FOR ME ALREADY!!! PLEASE PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP ME????????? Hopefully!!!!!!! Val lol Thanks Carrie I have tried your suggested webpage but it didnt help me either!!

> FREDERICK HENRY GEORGE With that set of names you need to make sure you clearly you differentiate the surname from the given names! Assuming you intended Frederick Henry GEORGE , there is no obvious match on the exact name, or resonable variations, in the NSW BDM index in the 1875 to 1885 period. I also tried Henry GEORGE (and variations) and found this match.... 2256/1881 GEORGE HENRY ESTHER SYDNEY Year: 1881 Reg No.: 2256 Last name: GEORGE Give name: Henry Father: [None Shown] Mother: Esther GEORGE Reg District: Sydney Cheers, Bill Sydney, Australia

Bill Report 24 Mar 2005 13:45

> what do I do with the reg number please Bill > (is this more info I can send for?) You can order a full certificate which normally gives you additioanl info from the NSW Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages. They have a web site at: http://www(.)bdm(.)nsw(.)gov(.)au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords(.)htm Remember to take the () off the dots as you type the above URL into your web browser. You can order a certificate on line through the site. There isn't a way to plug the reference number on the site but if you a birth search on Henry GEORGE in the year 1881 it should display the right index record... just make sure the number matches. You can the add that record to your 'shopping cart' and proceed to check out, and pay via credit card. Cost for orders via the web process is AUD $24 per certificate (that's approx GBP £10). There is also a way to order certificates via post, which is decribed on the site, but it is more expensive (AUD $31 per certificate. Cheers, Bill Sydney, Australia

I've did some more searching using the NSW BDM CDs, which give additional search options over those on the web site, and still can't find anything else that looks like any sort of match for your Frederick Henry GEORGE. Cheers, Bill Sydney, Australia

Val, You've probably done this already, I have the same problem but with my gt gradfather who was from NZ. Have you sent for his army records, I wrote to NZ and gave them possible name, dates he would of been over here and when he possibly went back. They sent me a list with all possible soldiers and I sent for a set of records. Still chasing it but sister has sent for another lot (as only allowed one free one in a year). Don't know if Australia do the same, I know how you feel though its like a big brickwall. Good luck Dawn

Val :~) from West Wirral Report 5 Apr 2005 11:36

Thanks Dawn can you tell me please, what department in NZ you initially contacted? Then maybe I can look on web for similar department in Oz!! Good luck to you and your sister regarding your G.Grandfather and NZ. Many thanks again regards Val

Hi Val, Maybe these links will help you. This one will take you to the nominal roll of Australians in the First World War. There's about 4 Henry Georges on there, but no Frederick George. http://www.awm.gov.au/database/133/page.asp?Folder=19&Page=82&Surname=george This one will take you to a list of all the Machine Gun Battalions. You may want to trawl your way through them. I've looked through up to and including the 5th Battalion, with no sign of him yet. http://www.awm.gov.au/database/awm8/unit/24index.asp Apparently the UK National Archives can help you with Australian servicemen serving the UK. Good Luck!! Kylie :)

Hi again Val, I have tried all avenues that I can think of, and come up a blank! What where have you searched for his death - maybe the answers are on his death certificate. I think maybe your grampy did same as my gtgrampy. When Joseph Henry migrated out here to Aus. he became Harry Joseph - I shouldn't talk, the only people who ever used my given name were officials, and my parents when they were mad at me. Good luck Laurie
