They could have gone anywhere, or nowhere. They could be mis-transcribed. If you provide names and ages, we can have a look for you :)

I have done a search on the census returns and seem to lose a family. They are in the 1881 census, nowhere in the whole of england in 1891 but reappear in 1901. can anybody give me any tips on how to find out where they went.
