I have done a search on the census returns and seem to lose a family. They are in the 1881 census, nowhere in the whole of england in 1891 but reappear in 1901. can anybody give me any tips on how to find out where they went.

They could have gone anywhere, or nowhere. They could be mis-transcribed. If you provide names and ages, we can have a look for you :)

How did Sarah become May though? Also, I think I found Christopher as a boarder... or maybe not.

Francis sounds close. He was born in Filey and was a fisherman but Ann's a bit young and have no idea who May is. Closest i've come though

Hi David - I had this with my dad's side of the family, there on the 1871, 1881 & 1901, but adbucted by aliens on the 1891 - finally found them after about four months mistranscribed in a manned I'd never have thought of (found by some kind person on here after I'd nearly lost my marbles!). Thanks Trudy. It just amazes me how a full family can disappear off the face of the earth. They weren't well off so I can't imagine they've gone abroad and even if they had why would they want to come back to sunny scarborough.

I'm not sure where your 1881 list was transcribed to/from, but (after looking at the image on Ancestry) Francis shows as 51 on the image and Mary, aged 7, scholar , appears to be missing from your list. Mary would probably be the 'May'. Christine
