Just got back from a weekend away and noticed all the extra input on the thread!! Thank you! I nearly got excited there Sleepy Jo because if your Ayton had been a surname, you would have been the first person to maybe have a connection with my tree! Never mind! Thank you Geoff for the Hayton/Whitehaven connection - I think I'll file the IGI birth index for Robinson under 'possible'. Helen:-)

Geoff Report 22 Apr 2005 23:24

Hayton is certainly a Cumberland name - I think two villages up there are called Hayton and I had a great-aunt marry a Hayton in Whitehaven. Re: Martin - I think that is more likely her mother's (or grandmother's) maiden name rather than her own.

JosieByCoast Report 22 Apr 2005 23:11

She could have married his brother or cousin first then became a widow and when she remarried she would have used her married name instead of maiden name, if you follow me. I got several of those in my tree. - just a thought

I've found marriages on the IGI minus the brides maiden name. Given the unusual name of Priscilla 'Martin' Ayton, isn't it poss her maiden name was Martin?? Just an idea.... Sarah

Woops, a very big W O O O O O P S . My Ayton was a first name, so sorry. enjoyed reading this read anycase. Josie

Helen Report 22 Apr 2005 22:51

Maybe someone will disagree with me but I've never seen a marriage on the IGI where the brides maiden name isn't given. If you check out Ayton births in Hampshire on the IGI there are quite a few especially in the Brighton area, so not too far from Littlehampton. I think it's possible Priscilla was born an Ayton, married an Ayton and died an Ayton.

Hi Helen, I haven't read all this thread yet, just about to with interest, cos we've an Ayton in our tree and we are in Sussex! Josie

Thank you everyone for your help - I've got lots to keep me busy now :-) Helenxx

Helen Report 22 Apr 2005 21:40

Helen I would try a post on the Records Office Board to see if anyone has 1861 for Hampshire. If you give death cert details there may be someone who can help.

Georgette

Georgette Report 22 Apr 2005 21:37

His wife's name was Priscilla Martin Ayton. I found the marriage on the IGI and it doesn't give her maiden name, but I know she is the Mother from my 2xgrt-grandmother's birth details and also the repetition of the names in the children. By order 'those things online' - do you mean the army records? I'll go back and have a look :-) Helenxx

Hello me again, I forgot to say I haven't looked at the 1841 census, or any other for that matter, because I don't know how to get hold of them over here. Helenxx

Georgette Report 22 Apr 2005 21:26

I've just had a look at the National Archives site and so have answered my own question! Shall have to beg another day of childcare from my parents during the summer holidays when I'm over. The FOH site? I don't know that one - but it looks like he could be a son and perhaps Parsons is Robinson's wife's maiden name - now I really am getting carried away! Thank you Sarah this is fantastic! I'll just go off and see where the 34th Foot were in 1829. Helen:-))

sarahjw03

sarahjw03 Report 22 Apr 2005 21:19

This site tells you where the 34th foot was posted 1702-1959. www*regiments*org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/034-1*htm Replace * with . Also on FHO site, Hampshire burial index: Name :Robinson Parsons Ayton buried 23 Mar 1837 age 8 Parish :North Stoneham Unusual name: Poss relative? Sarah (again!) You can order some stuff online from Kew, details on the website!

Georgette Report 22 Apr 2005 21:11

Thank you Sarah! That's him! On the death certificate it says 'Late Surgeon 34th Foot'. To view these records I'd have to go to Kew would I?

Colette Report 22 Apr 2005 21:09

Hi Helen he could be one and the same man and he may have been baptised 10yrs after he was born i have seen children baptised at various ages. The parish marriage record normaly says of this parish or not of this parish but you never know, it may be worth having a look. On the IGI it says fathers name only Henry any idea of his mothers name or any other siblings he had. Also have you found him on the 1841 1851 & 1861. Regards Colette xxx

Georgette

Georgette Report 22 Apr 2005 21:08

Bonsoir to you too Nell! :-) He died in Portchester, Fareham district, Hampshire and I suppose if he was no longer in the army he might have already been there in 1841. Otherwise I think the 34th Foot moved around a lot! I don't have any information about siblings either - I think he may be my brick wall! Helenxx

Have you tried searching the National Archives for his military records? I found lots of info on some of mine from their army records, including place of birth, description, medical history, where posted etc. I did a quick search of the catalogue for you and this came up. Could it be him, as it references the navy not army? Robinson Ayton, Surgeon's Mate. Grappler, Grouville Bay, 26 August 1798 Normal Closure before FOI Act: 30 years Open Document, Open Description Held by The National Archives, Kew Item details: PC 1/118B/109 Sarah
