Josie So sorry for the delay but I decided it was time for bed, can't sleep so back on here again! QE stands for Quarter Ended, all births, deaths & marriages are registered in quarters QE March is Jan-March, QE June is April-June, etc, etc. Some local offices can be really helpful if you get in touch with them, some can be very unhelpful it's just ther luck of the draw. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/RegOffice/ that gives you details of the different register offices in England and Wales. Good luck! Rachel

Wildcard character is either an * - which substitutes for mulitple letters, or a ? which is for only 1 letter. The nuisance is that they must be preceded by at least 3 characters, so you cant do *ingle - which would have picked up your spellings in 1871 etc. Its handy for names and placenames if you think there might be an incorrect transcription. Its also a useful shorthand for long names like Birmingham If you werent sure how Jonathan was being spelled - use Jon* - that picks up JonathOn and JonathAn for eg. Placenames are just as prone to being mistranscribed as person names .... hope this helps - there's help online in Ancestry for this stuff too ...

So, yet another Moses born about 1801. I think my Moses father was named William, which I hope to confirm when I get marriage cert, maybe this Moses was Williams brother....... I know the name Moses was only dropped by my Grandmother - all of her children had middle names except one, she left the middle name out when her last son was registered as my grandfather had insisted it be Moses and she wasnt having any of it! Thanks again Necromancer - another to go in my file, not too many Skingles about in the Takeley area, must all be related somewhere along the line....

Josie - tip: when in doubt leave the surname out and search by forename, pob and dob +/- 2 years or more ... use a wildcard in the pob if necessary ...

Hello Necromancer, The Moses (Walter) in 1871 is my grandfathers brother, but I dont think that the death in September 1872 is his as I have him marrying in 1892..... unless Ive got my wires crossed somewhere! Will have to check that one out. Thanks for your help Josie

Phoenix Report 4 Jun 2005 23:53

You were always SUPPOSED to register a birth. BUT to start with, you were fined if you registered a birth late, but not pursued if you didn't register at all. It was only in 1875, following a scandal in which a registrar INVENTED entries in order to bump up his fees, that you were fined for non-registration. Lots of people in the 1840s thought that baptism was sufficient, so didn't bother to register the birth.

from memory I think fines could be levied from the early 1870s ....

Hi Pink Tabitha, I got the marriage entry from an excel spreadsheet that has been collated by someone (I think the rector????) of the church where the marriage took place (in the village where I went to school and where Moses was born) I found it on a local history website. Again, as answered to Jess, I thought it was compulsory to register births then?? When did it become compulsory? Thanks your help. Josie
