I have seen this in my family too - although the dates are a little bit further on. Middle names are not always listed at baptism or indeed at registration, however, when they appear later on in life they all of a sudden have a middle name. Also it appears, in my tree anyway, that some of them used their middle names as every day names instead of their first names which I think was to stop confusion, e.g. George Richard (father) Margery Elizabeth (mother and married couple) had 2 children called George Richard and Margery Elizabeth, however on all the census the children are down as Richard and Elizabeth. Hi DD Don't! With this family, anything is possible. My son hasn't stopped giggling yet about the guy's name being John Thomas! Hi Sue Always possible but he was consistent with being called Edward up to and including the baptism of JT, on all the census and on Elizabeth's marriage certificate in 1852. There's only this certificate that doesn't add up! Thanks to everyone for your input, it's certainly helped to make things a little clearer. Victor's suggestion about the death is a good one, as is Sarah's about the Will. So far I've been looking for both under Edward Martin. Time to stretch my horizons a little with regards to name variations. I hope that JT's marriage cert might make things a little clearer as well. Unless he's plucked a 3rd name out of thin air! Lou x
