Shelli4 Report 14 Jun 2005 11:02

Just received a birth cert for 1885 LONDON. Looks like 42 Prusson Street ( might not be tho!!) I can't find any Prusson St or anything similar on my maps.... Registration district St George in the East Sub district St John in the County of Middx. So i looked on genuki and found this...... St. George in the East Created 1st July 1837. Abolished 1st January 1926 (incorporated into Stepney district). In Middlesex until 1889. Sub-districts : St. George North; St. George and St. John; St. John; St. Mary; St. Paul. GRO volumes : II (1837-51); 1c (1852-1925). But which St johns is mine?????? the one on it's own or the one with St George?? I'm favouring the one with St George as it is the right area for the family and there is a St John the Evangelist whoes parish borders St George in the East Can anyone find Prusson street for me??? Or something similar???

Have just realised the workhouse appears to be in Prusom St. So what if they were in the workhouse??? would the address on the cert just show the address or would it state workhouse? Previous ones of mine actaully state workhouse but i realise that may not always be the case. This would explain why they are a bit further away than I thought they should be. Can I find out what the address of a work hosue was???

Shelli4 Report 14 Jun 2005 12:45

Heather the family wasn't in the workhouse in a cencus yr as i have them in 1891 and again in 1901. Just wondered if they fell on hard times btween census and entered the workhouse for p'haps just the birth?? That does happen doesn't it? Found this on the website you sent... St George in the East had a parish workhouse situated between Prusom Street and and Princes Street (now Raine Street), Wapping, dating from at least 1824 It also shows a map of 1880 and it is still the same workhouse in the same place!!! OOOHHH Mind going into over drive now LOL
