The Ego Report 22 Aug 2005 20:21

JOHN CUBITT married EMILY WATTS March 1854 Tunstead 4b 61. ...........sadly EMILY died. Either Dec 1859 4b 36 in Tunstead or March 1859 4b 42 Erpingham. This must have been at the time of childbirth or close, and my theory is that the couple had split up,or were living seperately, which explains this................. Laura Hannah Watts Birth Dec 1859 Erpingham 4b 63. Of course once she has died father comes back on the scene, but not straight away-this would explain her being with another family. Also fits with him coming back to the fold with his father in law to do the decent thing. There might have been an initial query as to whos baby it was, hence born by mothers name, then once father was left, after mothers death, she was given his surname.

This sounds tenuous but try looking for John charles Cubitt or if john and Charles were brothers. Also he could be Johns brother and still be called son in law.

Pippa, We're just brain storming at the moment. On all censuses 1861-1901, Laura was Laura only. I only found the Edna on the Death cert in 1913. I also need the 1841 census for George Watts, Catfield to see if Emily is another daughter of George and Harriett. She wasn't on the 1851 census, but by 1851 she could easily have been working away from home. None of this is IGI ofcourse which would have been helpful but suspect they were an irreligeous lot anyway. Tunstead is the reg district for Catfield so that fits., but Erpingham?? it's about 25 miles away. I found an Emily Watts born 1837 (february unfortunately)Worstead, IGI, not extracted from records, which co-incidently is where George's wife Harriet was born.

Oh D*** and blast!! an Elizabeth!! But thanks for that. I have on my tree unknown Watts as mother for Laura, I knew he must have had another daughter. But not Emily-- Shucks. The Emily b Worstead is not his either, just found her as servant ,b worstead living Barsham SFK on 1961 Oh well back to the drawing board. Think I'll have to send for those certs that Alter found to see if it all fits in. Just hope hubby doesn't see bank statement, I sent for 10 death certs 2 weeks ago, but it was worth it! And you found a Robert too. I wonder what happened to him? I found a George, son of George and Harriett, who died age 1yr 11 months in 1841, I photographed his grave at Catfield a few months ago, but couldn't find any other Watts there. By the way if anyone goes to the Norfolk Broads the Crown does superb meals, bet it wasn't like that when George was there.:)

Have you seen the IGI batch numer 7030613. For some reason it had lots of Watts. Perhaps you are related to one of them! The one thing I have learnt from my Norfolk ancestors is that they always breed with who they know. I have lots of cousins marrying each other my gene pool must be very small! Pippa

The Ego Report 22 Aug 2005 22:43

in order to check who Charles married out of the Watts family, were stuck because there are 3 posibles but they have been messed up by free bmd. June 1853 Charles Cubitt appears on his own in the sheet.Poor thing,no one to play with. March 1859 Charles Cubitt appears with 2 other Cubitts for a threesome ??Now thats what I call, keeping it in the family. March 1863 Charles Cubitt appears with 2 women only-now thats what I call a menage a trois!

babs123 Report 22 Aug 2005 22:53

Yes I got confused by the 1859 one, unless they were brothers and sisters and their wives are on the next page!! I've got those on file. The confusing thing is that there are several families of Cubitts in Catfield and they don't appear to be related. One a Farmer, one a retired Army something and my little Laura with poss Father Charles at the Crown with George Watts. I'm looking at this Elizabeth now that Pippa found on 1841 age 15, She'd be the right age. You've just saved me £21, won't send for the certs now.
