Ted Report 27 Sep 2005 11:04

hi all, Ive been scraping together all my loose change and savings and up to now it comes to £3. 24 and an old half p, so after talking to Mo my wife weve decided not to go ahead with our bid, after all where would I get £300, never mind £300 million? Apart from that, this is the best site on the web as far as im concerned, made up of ordinary people helping each other out, and doing it marvellously, I cant think of anywhere else where users are so obliging, apart from some of the technical pc users sites, like COMPUTERACTIVE site and a few more I use. Its the people who use the site which makes it so good, and the price is a fair one. Destroy that and you destroy the site. Dont let ANCESTRY get hold of it, or you will find a whopping increase in fees, thats not to say ANCESTRY arent good. I think im putting my foot in my mouth right now, so enough said TED.

Cant believe the genes site is worth so much-its very clever-if you stand back and look at what they are -they are just one big network of names that can communicate to each other-the site is a sum of all its parts ie its members. They are only providing a network of communication-a message board forum with nobs on,and a name database that we all contributed towards-they have provided us with nothing more. *take away all the people who do lookups for free *take away threads put up like grampa jims tips, website list etc,all handwritten and contributed by members for free. *take away the members who have a wealth of genealogical experience and those who give up their time free of charge. *take away the contributions entered by individuals about their family done in their time and as a result of their expense buying certs, etc. whats left...........? a chat room, and conga word game? The site is effectively a cooperative-and its value has been enhanced by us-members join because we help them, and we provide information .The site just enables this to happen,it didnt buy the information,or work for it. Imagine an empty house, bare walls,no glass in the windows,no floor boards,no furniture,no lights,no kitchen or bathroom......... *we bought the glass *we bought the floorboards *we bought the beds ,the kitchen units, the lights, the bathroom suite etc. All they did was open the door and provide us with gas, electric and water, and charged us rent,on an unfurnished property. What we have done is make it into a home, that can be used ,enjoyed and lived in-we have made a brick shell habitable,AND INCREASED ITS VALUE AS A RESULT.

Alter ego very well said, i must admit, when you look at this that way your are correct. i wished i had thought of an idea to open a site like this, LOL. but like you say members make a site not the site itself, they provided the service which yes we do pay for. :-)
