Jim & Carol, Thank you both for your advice. Jim that is an excellent idea I will definitely send away for that birth certificate. I do not know why I didn't think of it myself. I really appreciate all the help I get on this site. Don't know what I would do without you all. Thanks Leigh

Hi Leigh, The Hampshire Records Office should be able to supply you with a printout of the parish register entry. http://www.hants(.)gov(.)uk/record-office/

I have just realised, a birth cert. of one of the children will give wife's name. This one looks a very good match; View Record HATCHER, George Henry 1847 December Births Romsey (1837-1932) Hampshire Wiltshire

Hi Leigh The reference you have got indicates that it is one of a list of marriages. If you are anywhere near an LDS library, then you can order the film that it is on. That means (on the assumption that it is from the registers themselves and not just a transcription) that you can look for yourself, see if there are any notes in the margin, who the witnesses are and whether they (or your man) crop up witnessing other marriages. Anybody doing the search for you will do what you tell them to do (hopefully!) but may not recognise other references that make sense to you. Good luck Brenda

Hi Kathleen, Thanks for your reply and help. I too belong to Ancestry and hope very much that they hurry and get these census up, it would make our research so much easier. Thanks again. Regards Leigh

Leigh, Some people on Genes have discs of the 1841 and 1851 census and will do lookups. However if you are patient, hopefully Ancestry will have these census records online before the end of the year (we've all got our fingers crossed that it will be sooner). There will then be lots of people who will be able to do look-ups for you. Kath. x

Thanks Jim, That is my James Hatcher. I have not got access to 1851 and 1841 cencus. I would love to know how I can get access to them as I would then be able to ascertain if he indeed was married to Ann Olden. In 1861 he is a widower. Regards Leigh

Hi Leigh If you look at www.hants.gov.uk, there's an email link to the Records Office. Email them the details and ask whether they can supply you with a copy or with the details given that you lived in Oz. Can't hurt to ask! Lou

Leigh The records can be found on fiche/film at Hampshire Records Office in Winchester, Hampshire ( sometimes called Hants.) They have e mail contact if you go to their web site. If you put a message on the record office board, someone may do a lookup for you. Alternatively if you give exact date and location, the Record Office staff may help, but I don't know their charges. I have been there myself but I am at the other side of England and not free to visit at present. There is a study of Hampshire HATCHERs I believe. If I can find details, Ill get back to you.

Hi Lou, Unfortunately I live in Australia. I have managed quite well until now with the internet but feel I am getting down to the nitty gritty and really am lost as to go about doing this. Is there a precise address that I can approach about getting marriage, birth and death certificates for the Lockerley, Sherfield English area when they are before 1837. Regards Leigh

Hi Leigh If you're near the area, you could go and look at the pr entry. Sometimes the witnesses are a clue (siblings etc) or maybe his occupation matches that on the children's baptisms or any census you may have him on. If you're too far away, you could try posting a look up request on the board for anyone going to the RO you need to see whether they could get the details for you. Or some Records Offices will supply you with a photocopy of the entry for a small fee. I recently obtained copies of 2 marriage entries and 2 burial records from a Records Office for the grand total of £1.55! Lou

Hi All, Thanks so much for your replies. I have the marriage from the IGI Individual Record. Is there no way I can verify that this is the correct James Hatcher that I am after? Do you just hope for the best. There were a lot of Hatchers in the Lockerley area at that time. Regards Leigh

If you don't yet know the parish, and the event is not on Family Search, you could try contacting the Hampshire Genealogical Society as they have a marriage index, which I think is complete now.

Leigh Have you actually located the marriage or do you just know that they married in Hampshire?
