Think I might have found the answer to the daughter's name. Florence Priscilla (Florrie) Oswestry 1892 1st quarter. Is it a coincidence that my mother was also called Florence? Joan

Thanks Robin, I feel better about calling him Gethin now. I will look at the BMD's later for the daughter and come back to you all if I find anything that it could be. Joan

Looking at the image again, and with hindsight, I can see that it could be Gethin. Kath. x

Montmorency Report 25 Jan 2006 17:20

enumerators had to read a lot of bad writing and they only had a small sample of each to go on. There's a way of writing a G that could be taken as an S For the other one there's an Enis of the right age in the BMDs, though I'm having more trouble seeing how that could be miswritten and misread as, well, whatever it is

I think I will call him Gethin until I can prove differently. He would be my grandfather's 1st cousin. Once again many thanks Joan

Merry

Merry Report 25 Jan 2006 16:59

I should think that's because the census enumerator was reading the householders writing and had never heard the name before! The reg for William Oswald is the only one with middle initial ''O''. Merry

JoanC Report 25 Jan 2006 16:56

Hi Merry. I had thought that they might be twins, but the other name doesn't look a bit like Gethin. I do know the name Gethin. I haven't had chance to look any further yet for the daughters name, but will do so soon. Many thanks Joan

Apologies if I'm duplicating anyone, but girl looks like Kezia to me, though I can't see a birth reg!! The boys (twins) must be these two, given William is William O. Williams on the census: Name: Williams, William Oswald Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1893 District: Oswestry County: Denbighshire Shropshire Volume: 6a Page: 649 Name: Williams, Gethin Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1893 District: Oswestry County: Denbighshire Shropshire Volume: 6a Page: 649 Merry

Kathleen I too thought that they might be twins, I had not looked as far back as 1892. I found a William O in 4th qtr 1893 but no Selbun. I did find a Gethin! but don't think it could be that! Thanks for looking Joan

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 25 Jan 2006 16:19

I know the date is probably a year out from the census, but it looks like 'Selbun' and William might be twins as they are both described as aged 7. On Ancestry there are these two births on the same page:- June qtr. 1892, Oswestry, 6a, 688 William Williams, and Bertie Williams. I don't know, though, whether Bertie could be misheard for Selbun. Hi Joan, I have looked at the indexes for Selbun but can't see it. Will have another look. Thanks for your help. Joan

Kathleen I will check for Rosie also Joan

JoanC

JoanC Report 25 Jan 2006 16:03

Thanks again for your suggestion Helen. It could well be Reba. Joan

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 25 Jan 2006 16:02

I think the girl is Rosie, but Selbun doesn't look like anything other than Selbun, but I'm pretty sure it will be something else. Kath. x

Selburn or whoever he is is 7 and Razis is 8 so you could try looking for their births. I had a quick look on ancestry civil reg and found Williams, Reba Dyllis Births Sep 1893 Oswestry Volume: 6a Page: 687 Perhaps enumerator misheard Reba for Rezis?

JoanC Report 25 Jan 2006 15:58

I have looked in the birth index for Selburn and Selbun but no look. I will look for Lelburn. I thought the daughter's name could begin with a K. Will trawl through the records for Kazis. Thanks for all your suggestions. Joan
