BMD's Certificates are difficult to come by as the very information that you seek. You have to provide, to get a copy of said certificates. These certificates are obtained from the Department of Home Affairs. Good luck! The best place to start is The National Archives of South Africa, looking for death notices which is not to be confused with a death certificate. It is more complete and may have the names of spouses and children as well. The following web sites will help you get started. Anne Lehmkuhl's SA site http://www(.)rupert.net/~lkool/ Conrad Mercer's SA Genealogy site http://home(.)global(.)co(.)za/~mercon/index(.)htm Cyndi's List - South Africa http://www(.)cyndislist(.)com/soafrica(.)htm Home Affairs Main Page http://home-affairs(.)pwv(.)gov(.)za/default_blue(.)asp National Archives of South Africa http://www(.)national(.)archives(.)gov(.)za/ Ships and passenger lists http://sa-passenger-list.za(.)net/index(.)php Happy Hunting, Lindy ;-))

Thank you for the addresses, Lindy. I havehad a look at the home affairs one to see if I can get some certificates, as I have the actual dates of birth for the people I am interested in. Anne

Anne, It is a nightmare to search if you don't know where to look. If you go to the NAAIRS Help Guidelines Page, it will explain how to search the archives. Or proceed directly to the ' Search National Automated Archival Information Retrieval System.' Select the Depot that you require to do your search, i.e. KAB stands for Cape Town and in the first line type in the surname you are looking for and hopefully a list of names will appear. If it is a very common name, and there is pages and pages of names, type the christian name in the first line and the surname in the second line. If nothing comes up try searching in Non Public Records. If I have managed to confuse you even more let me know who you are looking for and I will see what I can find. Just so that you know it is impossible to get into the archives this afternoon as they are overloaded. Happy hunting! Lindy ;-))))))))

Hi Lindy, Thank you for that information. I will have another try perhaps at the weekend. Would it be okay to PM you if I get stuck looking at the archives or would you prefer me to reply to this thread? Anne.

Thanks Lindy that will be very useful in getting me started. I've heard that there are no SA online BMD indexes and census like the UK. Is that true?
