Hi, I have an Annie Eliza Morris formerley Rippin who married my gg grandfather in dec 1901. He was John Haycroft. On their marriage cert it says her father was a watchmaker/jeweller deceased. I have no idea where she was from, how do I find out? She was 38 at the marriage in Barnsley, South Yorks. Lisa

What was her father's name? If you have a name and an occupation he can probably be found on the 1861 census. Andrew.

So you're looking for a Something RIPPIN, jeweller/watchmaker who died before Dec 1901? Christine

This looks like a possibility - knowing the way people switched their names around... Name: RIPPIN, Elizabeth Ann Record Type: Births Quarter: June Year: 1862 District: Spalding County: Lincolnshire Volume: 7a Page: 336 Christine

Historical Directories (Post Office Directory of Lincolnshire, 1868) show a RIPPIN, Ann (Mrs) watch maker in Holbeach, Lincs. furthermore, there's a RIPPIN, James, watch maker, Arcade, Spalding, Lincs. Christine

So far, there's nothing to link your Annie with James's family. This looks like him in 1871, when you'd expect Annie to be at home: James Rippin abt 1821 Spalding, Lincolnshire, England Head, watch maker Mary Ann Rippin abt 1823 Spalding, Lincolnshire, England Wife Lucy Ann Rippin abt 1858 Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England Daughter, scholar Alfred W Rippin abt 1861 Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England Son, scholar Arthur E Rippin abt 1864 Spalding, Lincolnshire, England Son, scholar Source information: RG10/3322 Registration district: Spalding Sub-registration district: Spalding ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Folio: 48 Page: 2 But it does establish the watchmaker tradition with the name. This looks like an interesting household from your point of view: Ann Rippin abt 1811 Spalding, Lincolnshire, England Head, widow, jeweller Ann Rippin abt 1838 Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England Daughter, jeweller **Eliza Rippin abt 1859 Spalding, Lincolnshire, England Niece, general servant, domestic Thos Geo Percy Barlow abt 1848 Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England Jonereyman (journeyman) Source information: RG10/3331 Registration district: Holbeach Sub-registration district: Holbeach ED, institution, or vessel: 12 Folio: 74 Page: 11 Christine

Hi Christine, sorry it took me so long to reply, kids etc. Annie's father was called Joseph Rippin, but everything else looks like it fits, Thanks,Lisa

Christine in Herts Report 10 Feb 2006 18:00

Joseph is in the same census areas. I've seen him, too. He was a watchmaker in Spalding. There's a poss death in 1867. Christine

Thats fantastic, Its very interesting that Annie came from Lincolnshire as John Haycroft married two other ladies from that area, even though he lived in Barnsley. Thanks ever so much for all the digging, Lisa

Christine in Herts Report 10 Feb 2006 18:13

Just so you know how I picked on Lincs: It's an unusual surname; I put John (a nice common first name, statistically) RIPPIN into births in Ancestry and looked to see where most of the births were... I also allowed that there might be spelling doubts/mistranscriptions. Christine

Christine in Herts Report 10 Feb 2006 18:15

PS - it looks like Joseph died of a broken heart - or the same problem that afflicted his wife - there's an Eliza, aged 40, whose death was registered in the June Q of 1867 - possibly why young Eliza was with her Aunt Ann in 1871? (assuming - risky - that it's the right Eliza.
