Hi I'm back Mealtimes for husband are sacrosant - he always wants to talk face to face rather than to the back of my head when I'm computering. Leah I live in Polis Chrysochous (n.w. corner). I've seen your name here before & wondered if it was Cpriot. How do you research your Cypriot rellies? Just started Greek lessons so understood Kali Nikta! Merry Beautiful weather here - spring has arrived perhaps - blue skies, sunshine, 20+C day temps. Where are you? I like the Erle death - dau. Susanna married 1858, so feasible. Will follow up, Newton Abbott not far from Totnes. I'm glad it's not just me who can't find Nicholas. I too think he must have been at sea for censuses. Thank you all again - no doubt we'll talk again soon on one of my almost daily visits. This just has to be the friendliest and most helpful board I've come across. Yia sas! Pam

Oh Pam, you lucky thing living in Cyprus - that's where my family are from on dad's side. He lives in Nicosia. Wish I could have been of help but this one is a real mystery. I suppose it is a bit far-fetched to think he could have married two women at around the same time in different places. Such a coincidence with the occupation though isn't it? Ah well...maybe someone else will come up with something for you. Perhaps your Nicholas was away at sea whenever the census was taken. Kali Nikta - Leah

Hello again Merry Thanks - I have these IGI entries in my files. The 'Thomas' is quite interesting. I'm obviously going to have to find the PRO for this. I can't get to any Records Office as I live in Cyprus. Pam

Leah The problem with the theory is that he was stationed at Whitehaven as Coastguard for about 30 years! Pam

I wonder if these have anything to do with your chap. They are not to be relied upon as are all entries submitted by an LDS church member, and apart from that, even if they are correct, may be NOTHING to do with your chap...... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nicholas Earle Event(s): Birth: Christening: 07 APR 1816 Harberton, Devon, England Parents: Father: Thomas Huxham Earl Mother: Sarah Andrews Messages: Record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thomas Huxham Earl Event(s): Birth: Christening: 16 JUN 1778 Harberton, Devon, England Marriages: Spouse: Sarah Andrews Marriage: 26 DEC 1803 Harberton, Devon, England Messages: Record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There are seven baptisms for children of this couple on the IGI (all submitted entries), and the only son is Nicholas. Harberton is about 2 miles from Totnes. Merry

Pam - haha - yes, that's exactly what I was wondering...

Thanks for your efforts, but I've looked at both these Nicholases loads of times. Elaine - The Rattery one remains unmarried living in the family home, apparently for ever. Leah - Some censuses have this Nicholas b. Devon. However he m. Harriet in 1830s and she appears with him on subsequent censuses. So it ain't him either. Unless he had a wife in every port !! Pam

I´m not convinced now about that death certificate - I think it may relate to the Nicholas Earle I have just found in 1871 - and I´m not sure he is your man.

Pam Not sure if this guy has anything to do with who you're looking for but his occupation caught my eye...'Commisioned Boatman Coast Guard Services'...on the 1851 Census...but he's with a different wife. Elizabeth Earle abt 1839 Isle of Wight, Freshwater Daughter Eastbourne Sussex Harriet Earle abt 1805 Clymouth, Hampshire, England Wife Eastbourne Sussex Nicholas Earle abt 1809 Portsmouth, Hampshire, England Head Eastbourne Sussex Peter Earle abt 1841 Eastbourne, Sussex, England Son Eastbourne Sussex Leah

Thanks for death Elaine - do you think there is any mileage in getting cert? The only new information would be the name of the informant. I've found a possible death for his wife Jane in 1855 - perhaps I should order both certs? Thanks again, Pam

Elaine

Elaine Report 22 Feb 2006 16:48

there is a possible death here Earle, Nicholas Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 66 Quarter: March Year: 1877 District: Totnes County: Devon Volume: 5b Page: 139 which would give his year of birth c 1811

Pam

Pam Report 22 Feb 2006 16:42

Me again BTW, I don't know his date or place of birth, that's what I'm trying to find out! He was mar. to a Totnes girl, in Totnes, and their first child was b. there, but it doesn't mean to say that HE was b. there. I've looked at all likely surrounding villages. Oo-o-o-h it's sooo frustrating! Pam

Hi Elaine Yes I've been doing that for the last couple of hours and I'm going bog-eyed! I'm looking for Nicholas Earle (yet again), probably b. abt 1810-20 in Devon. Just received his mar.cert with Jane Watson (Oct 1838). Not a great deal of help. Place of marriage Totnes Parish Church. Nicholas is shown as Labourer, of full age. Father Thomas Earle, Labourer. Nicholas was a mariner on mar.cert of his dau Susan/nah. Haven't found him on ANY census. Susan/nah's birth doesn't appear to have been registered - I've trawled the index images for two years before 1841 Census, where she is shown with her mother as age 1 in Totnes. (This kindly found for me by Suzanne Butler on this board). On 1851 the mis-spelling is Hearle (found for me by Merry on this board). I honestly do try myself, but have run out of ideas, apart from trying Totnes Parish Register. Very grateful for any help at all. Pam
