If you go to the first page of the images (Annie is on page 6 of 19) some of the adults are listed as foster workers. Maybe the cottages were foster homes?

Inmate just means they lived there. Nowadays it has sinister connotations, with workhouses and prisons, and lunatic asylums, but it just meant they lived there. nell

If you look at the description given by the enumerator (click on Coleshill at the top of the image, then District Cottage Homes) it says - for children removed by Birmingham Board of Guardians from their Birmingham Workhouse. Sounds quite interesting, my tree never gets any good stuff!

If you google (or y a h o o or whatever you prefer) cottage homes, it comes up with articles about early childrens homes. Maybe it was that? Good luck researching it. I'd be ordering the birth certificate to see who the parents were and then try and find what happened to them.

Angie I'm now turning into your stalker! I found this guy in 1901 - he might be their dad? Thomas Sennett, married, 34, Slater, b Birmingham - a prisoner in His Majestys Prison, Birmingham. There is a marriage for a Thomas Sennett in Sep 1894 in Birmingham and then these births - Births Mar 1895 Sennett Martha Ellen Birmingham 6d 181 Births Mar 1897 Sennett Annie Louisa Birmingham 6d 183 Births Mar 1899 Sennett John Thomas Birmingham 6d 56 Deaths Sep 1899 Sennett John Thomas 0 Birmingham 6d 171 They might be yours .....

Rachel Report 26 Feb 2006 17:54

And I've found a Flora Sennett in Birmingham Workhouse with a 2 wk old William Ernest Sennett. Again, only a maybe but if daddy is in prison and mummy is very heavily pregnant there wouldn't be a lot of income coming in. One of the options for Thomas' spouse is a Flora Vale. Once you get Annie's birth cert, hopefully all will become clear.

Angie Your family tree sounds miles more interesting than mine! Glad to hear you're not continuing with that particular family trait ;) Can you tell I'm stuck on my tree by any chance? :)
