I have just spoken to Worldpay, and was told by the chap there, that this was a large glitch in their system, and has now been sorted out. Anyone who was affected by this, will automatically receive a refund. All refunds have been made at their end, and were completed on the 7th March. Depending on card type etc, you should see a refund on your card by middle of next week - if not already. I have just phoned my card issuer, but refund not yet received. She said they can take up to 5 working days, so won't panic just yet. Will ring again, Tues or Wed. Debbie

Hi Christine, Thank you for posting this. I have to admit, I don't usually pay too much attention, to the breakdown on my bill (ignorance is bliss!!) Have just received my statement, and purposely checked, because of your message, for the payment for £52 for certs ordered a couple of weeks ago. And yes - it's on there twice!! I probably wouldn't of noticed, if you hadn't posted your thread. So thank you, again. About to ring the GRO. Debbie

Blimey Gary, you are a good mate - want to book a holiday for me? Mind you if you are ordering that many certs a month, you must be a man of means! As you say, no need for panic, its not like these are some con artists. I guess they are so overwhelmed at the moment that the temp staff are causing some probs.

not quite the same thing, i paid £1600 for a freinds holiday online with my card and he gave me the cash there and then, when i phoned for a balance a couple of days later, they had taken the £1600 twice so phoned my card co and they said yes its on our screen, but if its an error it may 'drop off ' the screen in a few days time, and it did and by the time i got my statement it was not on and if i had not phoned for a balance i would never have known, i would not panic about it these are mistakes that will get put right, these are proper companies not crooks out to rob you I have ordered between 10 & 20 certs a month for 3 years and have never been charged twice.

I have been charged £14 on 28/2/06 and then £14 again on 1/3/06. My order was placed on the 27th Feb and dispatch date advised as 13th March. These were my first 2 certificates ordered online and worried to death incase I don't receive them let alone the added shock this morning when the card statement told me they had charged a total of £28! I have emailed the reply section to that WorldPay ([email protected]) no reply as yet but will try that phone number thanks Christine

Hi I agree! have also had this prob and also payments made and no certificates received and ongoing dialogue. It is hard work trying to prove you havent had the certificates ordered! Also i have made a payment for a record with correct names and dates and locations i was sure existed only to be advised from GRO that no certificate existed and they charged me the admin charge for looking. After thinking i was going nuts it was a kind person on Genes who confirmed the existence of the record and i have now managed to get the certificate although i am still waiting for the £4 admin charge to be refunded! Up to date accounts records required if dealing with GRO often

That's right Heather!

Heather Report 9 Mar 2006 19:57

So what you are saying is - you get only one confirmation of payment but they then take out two lots of money for the cert? Blimey, Ive ordered so many this month (blame the old free bmd index guys!) that I shall have to be really careful and check it.

Thanks for the tip. I just checked my credit card statement online and found that I too have been charged double for a cerificate ordered on 27/2/2006. I have emailed ONS to alert them to this. Very worrying, isn't it.

I just ordered four certificates today, hope they've sorted it out. there seems to be a bit of a delay at the GRO getting records out recently, don't know what's going on.

Hi i have just phoned the record office and they are aware of the problem, they passed me on to World Pay who are also aware of it. I got a very nice man who said that in a few days i should receive a e mail and a refund for the £14, they just need to sort out first who is to blame, their company or the bank. Kate
